Intrasite replication schedule
|

| Dear all,
I am currently studing MCSE 2000 and I have some confusion about intrasite
replication. According to MCSE book that I have, intrasite replication
happens every 5 minutes by default. But when I check the "<Automatically
generated>" schedule under NTDS setting in AD Sites and services,
replication with other intrasite domain controller is scheduled once per
hour. So is it once per hour or every 5 minutes for intrasite replication by
default???

Schedules do not apply to intrasite replication. What you're seeing
is simply a default GUI. You realize that it's extremely easy for you
to test this, right?

| As an addendum: this value/feature changes with w2003
server. The interval is changed to 15 seconds (from 5
minutes/300 seconds). If the value was changed in the
registry before the upgrade, however, then the upgrade
leaves the setting unchanged.
As Laura mentions, intra site replication is not schedule
based, but instead occurs using a push mechanism, where
DCs receiving updates push these updates via replication
to intra site partners after either 300 or 15 seconds. One
cannot specify a schedule for intra site replication - the
UI can only be used to mange inter site replication.
After all, you designed your site topology such that
you 'don't care' what happens within a site, since the
subnets are 'well connected', didn't you ?

| True is that intrasite is usually well connected. But what really bothers me
is that why is there a schedule set to once per hour in the automatically
generated intrasite connection?

Replication is NEVER push. It is either notify-pull (intrasite, or
intersite if change notification is enabled across site links) or
poll-pull (intersite).

I told you. It's a default GUI, and is ignored.

| Sorry, incorrect terminology on my part - 'push' (in this
context) meant 'notify-pull'.
I use the word push since DC1 'asks' DC2 to pull changes,
whereas across site links, DC2 would not pull changes
until the next replication cycle was due.
Thanks for the correction, Laura.

But DC1 simply *notifies* DC2 that it has changes. DC2 then requests
them.
