FRS and non-existing Server
|

| Nettransplant 2003-04-23, 1:23 pm |
| So, as part of studying I configured AD my.com with first server (Advanced
Server) first.my.com
Later I had a second server second.my.com and another (wow) third.my.com.
I reformatted third.my.com without demoting it first (learning process
remember).
First.my.com now shows frs failures (event ID 13508):
FRS is having problem enabling replication from third to first
How do I break this replication link? I have looked at ntdsutil but can't
seem to clean up when the device is offline.
Suggestions?

Amazing. I've given that link out twice today. Must be some kind of cosmic
synchronicity or something.

| Thanks. Process worked 100%.

Yeah. It's a common problem. Really there should be a gui way to do it IMO
because it's so common. Normally caused by hardware malfunction though which
is unavoidable.

You need to explore NTDSUtil further. Truly. Can you post what you've
attempted? If so, I can post you a sample of a correct cleanup using
NTDSUtil.

I disagree. Since one typically needs to be an Enterprise Admin to
perform most of the tasks related to metadata cleanup, one should
probably know more than how to click the "OK" button before even
attempting it.
Besides, Win2K3 offers some new, neato stuff where this is concerned.

Well there are a lot of really dangerous GUI tools around already I can't
see that it matters that there's another one (although having "delete
server" in ADUC probably would be a bit too easy :-) ). I'm of the opinion
that there should be two ways to do EVERYTHING. One via commandline, one via
GUI.

Having a failed domain rename in Win2K3 might disabuse you of that
idea. ;-)
