Hi,
Just wondering if any ppl here have decided to change
occupations due to the current Tech slump or due to loss
of a job. Ive been retrenched from a major corporation
recently and have been seriously considering changing over
from Database Administrator after 3 years to something
different or similar field. I've just started studying for
the MCSE exams and wondering if the networking/systems
admin side of things is any better in employment?.

Regards,
T.N

Yup, the Bat got out of IT, I had had enough and when the redundancy notice
came in I was lucky enough to find a field role, a bit of IT thrown in but
also lots of Electronics (my other career) so I'm back in Electronic
Engineering with better prospects and better money,
it was a personal decision to get out of network administrator roles, I was
very disillusioned with the industry, hope it picks up soon for you guys out
there

So from the feed bak im getting Network admin and Systems
admins are no better off than my last role as a DBA. All
these mega financial banking corporations are going down
the drain. Im thinking of starting my own compny where we
set up networks for small to medium sized buisnesses. Is
this futile in the current dot.com crashes?

works for me..
first thing to think about is how u approach the small companies.. dont hit
them with buzz words or drown them in acronyms.. they'll chuck u out of the
door..
treat them like people and sell it as a helping device.. not technology

If anything, I'd say it's worse.

I hate to sound fatalistic, but if it were me, there's no way I'd be
putting my income and credit rating on the line to try to start up a
business in this field. Things just aren't pretty out there right
now. Just my opinion.

i started with 400 gbp and the cost of setting up my web site. spent money
on getting a good website, makes you look proffessional.

the other thing u need a lot of is time, hassle people if u get one customer
lavish the bugger with time, give him freebies, dont charge for some work,
he's bound to be connected and could lead to more work..

also get hold of a laptop.. i couldn't afford one at the start.. and was a
pain

I did as Billy, it not easy and you need to put in a lot of hardwork, We've
been going 8 Months, and now we phone a prospective customer, they already
now about us. So the sale is almost already made. I was warned before
starting out getting businesses to come over to tour side would be hard, but
it has been harder for us to gain home user business.

And at the end of the day, no dipstick standing over your shoulder saying i
wouldn't do it like that!!!!
