Does anyone know a site or phone number to verify MCSE
credentials for potential employees?

TIA,

Have the prospect print out his/her MCP transcript and give you a copy.
It will have their MCP ID# listed. If there are any questions as to the
legitimacy of the transcript, email mcphelp@microsoft.com and give them
the MCP ID# and ask for confirmation of the facts presented.

Yes, there is such a number - (I've used it) where they can take a SSN and
tell you if someone's certified. in the US, the SSN is used as the test
center ID...

Now, to try and find said number........

Not if the candidate requested that something other than his/her SSN
be his/her testing ID.
