My dads PC was running slow so he defragged it which seems to have speeded
it up, the Hd was very fragmented. However, now when he tries to run
programs he gets the following:

A msg box opens which says:

Open With

Click the program you want to use to open the file "whatever file is". If
the program you want is not on the list click other.

He gets this with every program, however if he tries to open some files i.e
*.doc, *.xls, they open the app and work but he can't open the apps
directly. I have checked the file type associations in explorer and they
seem OK

Also if he tries to open the properties of my computer he gets the above msg
with RUNDLL32.EXE as the "whatever file is". I can open control panel but
then get the RUNDLL32.EXE error.

If I try to re install windows from within win98 it can't open setup.exe.

Can I reinstall windows from DOS via a boot disk into the original directory
and keep all he setting, will this help?

I am rather stuck at the moment and would like to avoid re installing all
his apps if possible.

Thanks for any help

Copy any data you want to retain to an alternate location then format your
drive and reinstall.

I think I encounter this problem about 2-3 years ago. There was a virus
there prevented me from running an *.exe file.

Have you tried running a virus scan on your system?

Tried a virus scan, came up with no probs. My dad doesn't connect to net and
only runs decent software, so not that surprised. It is as though the defrag
routine has lost some information!! Very strange, I think it might be
reinstall time :-(

Yes...first, will SFC work from the Run box?

Just run SFC, found a few probelms with files in the \programs sub dir, but
no windows file problems. Good call though, I have never seen the SFC
before. Did a reboot then I ran a scandisk after this and that didn't report
any disk problems, I think reinstall is beckoning. Unless there is anything
else I can try!

Just found something else, I can run the apps from the run box OK but not
from shortcuts or start menu, does this shed anymore light? I have looked at
the file type associaiton for application and it has no association,
unfortunatly I don't have another Win98 PC to check this! Also can't edit
the association or create another with the same extention.

A colleague just experienced this at a client site. It turned out to
be the result of an application called Web Enhancer, and she found
out by using filemon from sysinternals.com.

Typical...another freeware (and usually spyware) offering that
overstates it's usefulness and then because of either poor coding or
poor design, completely hoses the client system.

Don't be so sure...many of these 'questionable' web downloads can be
pretty sneaky at concealing the fact that they were ever installed. They
may not appear in Add/Remove Programs and may not have a Start Menu
folder. Use a program like Ad-Aware to help find and remove these kind
of spyware apps, you'll likely be surprised as to what is on your pc.

Exactly. And use the sysinternals tool; it's free.

Apart from the fact that the pc in question has never been connected to any

the sysinternal tool, to check the pcs that are connected.

Okay, if the pcs are "connected", how do you say that this machine
has never been on a network?

Besides, the tool has nothing to do with that. :-)

The w98 PC is my Dad's: no nic, no modem. The pcs that are connected are my
w2k pc, my w2k+w98 dual boot test machine and my 2 * w2k \xchng2k\sql2k

http://www.systernals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml

are very useful trouble shooting tools.
