| I am looking at seting up a home lab.
I only have three computers that can run win2k.
can some help or direct me to a site that will help me set up the lab for
use not on the web.
I dont have the win 2k books.
I do a full version of win2kserver and win2kpro and win XP pro
BUT
On the other hand I have Win NT4 MCSE books and a full version of win NT4
server.
and win98. I don't have winnt4/workstation

| Get a hub. Connect all three machines to the hub. Install Server on two of
the machines. Install Pro on the other one (XP or 2000 Pro shouldn't
matter). If you are studying for the pro test, install pro on 2 of the
computers, server on one.
You will want dhcp on one of the servers. That server should also hold the
DNS and Active Directory. The second should be a member server. (If you
are studying for the Active Directory Test, make both Domain controllers).
Those are my suggestions. My other suggestion is to pick up a windows 2000
server book and follow all the examples. If you understand NT4 very well,
you should not have too much trouble setting up the basic services in
Windows 2000 in the configurations I previously mentioned. Hope that helps
a little. Post another message if you need more help.

the 1st two deal w/ setting up a "common infrastructure"...the rest are all
labs

We recently had a Cisco rep in our center and I think he had a pretty good
quote: "Friends don't let Friends buy hubs"--I laughed anyway...
Linksys has an array of prouducts, but i would look at buying a
switch...personally, i'd look at one that one that also incorporated

It really is true for most production networks, although for testing a
troubleshooting nothing beats a dumb old hub!

I use the Linksys W11AP and have been very happy with it.

| Well of course a switch is better and almost all my networking products are
switches, but he just wanted to hookup a simple 3 computer test network
where a cheap 10 base T hub would suffice. There is always room to get
fancier but it just wanted to keep it to the basics.
