IMHO make backup a floppy:
- run %WINDIR%\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE
- choose Emergency Repair Disk
- click "Also backup the registry..."

BTW
I strongly recommend installing Recovery Console ( winnt32.exe /cmdcons )
It is very useful in case of trouble.
