Author adding new RAM to w98se machine????

I have been trying to add more RAM to my machine (an IBM desktop which runs Windows 98SE) and it doesn't appear to be registering it.

Can anyone tell me if there are any jumper settings that i should be changing on the motherboard or whether new added RAM is automatically detected on startup?

I'm not even sure if the RAM itself has integrity as it was taken from another 'dead' machine.

All help appreciated.
Thank You.

It's not a case of "any RAM will do". If it passes the test of fitting
correctly in the slot, your motherboard may require RAM of a particular
speed. Look at IBM's tech support on the Web for your machine's
specifications.

Companies like Kingston have loads of information.

I dont think win98 actually recognizes and uses anything over 128. I forget
the exact number but the OS is old and outdated. If your trying to but 256
or 512 in it you are wasting money.

upon my experience Win98SE can utilize max. 384 KB RAM
above this is a waste of money

I have installed 512, and it says 511 in system properties.
Works OK, I noticed an increase in performance when adding 256 to the 256
that where in it (all measures in MB).

A little more information is needed here, is the PC booting?
If not are you getting any BIOS beep codes?
Do you know what chip set is on the mother board?
On some older 440 chip sets more than 64 MB of RAM can be a problem.
There are jumper setting for RAM on some mother boards.
AFAIK Win 98SE can see as much RAM as your mother board can accommodate
However the OS can only address 192 MB of it.

It will address up to 4 GB of virtual memory, and 2 GB of physical RAM, but
above 384 MB of physical RAM the system can get buggy. I seem to remember
reading somewhere that you can force Windows 98 to only see 384 MB of your
RAM so you can dual boot to other operating systems that work fine above 384
MB, but I can't seem to find it.
