Hello,
When there are two WINS servers in different subnets and try to replicate
WINS through a router, how do I configure WINS servers or a router?
Please let me know. Thanks for your help.

Your question is not entirely clear, but WINS servers can replicate through
a router and communicate just as any other computers would communicate
through a router. Before you worry about WINS, make sure you have TCP/IP
connectivity through the router. Trying pinging back and forth from each
server. Don't move on to WINS before you have this resolved.

You may be confusing the actions of NetBIOS with WINS. NetBIOS broadcasts
will not pass through a router, which is one of the reasons that WINS is
implemented in the first place. If this does not answer your question or
help, let me know and I will try to clarify further if you can provide some
more information.

Hi.

WINS works like a proxy. It collects all the NETBIOS broadcats messages for
make possible the communication with the rest of the networks.

If your network just have one segment, there is no problem. But if you have
more than one, then you need a WINS for downlevel PCs (Win9x, WINNT) on each
segment, because the hostnames resolution for them is using NETBIOS, and
NETBIOS broadcast messages can't pass routers.

Thanks for replying to my question. I know NetBios is broadcast and a router
stops this.
Let me make sure.........When there is WINS in this subnet and another WINS
in another subnet to replicate the database and I can ping each other, it
can replicate without configuring anything.............
Anyway, thanks for your help and a great point.

Do a search on "WINS Proxy". You just need to set up a proxy in a client
computer, W2k-Pro or member server. it will forword the data on behave of
the requestor.
WINS proxies
A WINS proxy is a WINS client computer configured to act on behalf of other
host computers that cannot directly use WINS. WINS proxies help resolve
NetBIOS name queries for computers located on routed TCP/IP networks.

By default, most computers not able to use WINS use broadcasts to resolve
NetBIOS name queries and register their NetBIOS names on the network. You
can configure a WINS proxy to listen on behalf of these computers and to
query WINS for names not resolved by broadcast.

WINS proxies are only useful or necessary on networks that include NetBIOS
broadcast-only (or b-node) clients. For most networks, WINS-enabled clients
are common and WINS proxies are typically not needed.

WINS proxies are WINS-enabled computers that listen for b-node NetBIOS name
service functions (name registration, name release, and name query) and can
respond for those names that are remote and not used on the local network.
Proxies communicate directly with a WINS server to retrieve the information
necessary to respond to these local broadcasts.

WINS proxies are used in the following ways:

a.. When a b-node client registers its name, the proxy checks the name
against the WINS server database. If the name exists in the WINS database,
the proxy might send a negative registration response back to the b-node
client attempting to register the name.
b.. When a b-node client releases its name, the proxy deletes the client
name from its remote name cache.
c.. When a b-node client sends a name query, the proxy attempts to resolve
the name using information either locally contained in its cache of remote
names or through the use of information it obtains from the WINS server.

Generally, WIN proxies are not needed in any network, neither on routed
networks, because Win98/95, ME and Windows for WorkGroup are able to listen
and caches NETBIOS broadcast messages.

WIN Proxies are just useful with non-windows clients, like UNIX, for
example, because those kind of machines are unable to contact WINS servers.
