Server File Sharing Part II

| Thanks for all the input on part 1. ODBC was not something
I knew much about.
But, what about sharing for collaboration non database
files like Word documents for example.
What if I wanted to set up a Word file on a server that I
wanted several users to write to. Would they just be able
to open the file for writing one at a time?

| Why don't you give it a try??
It might be good practice for your 215 test.
I believe Word supports collaboration with annotation but I haven't tried
it.

| Something like RCS would be cool.
I don't know a package that does that for document sharing, off hand, but I
am sure they exist.

| Nope. It doesn't automatically track changes. You just check in and check
out documents. It provides version control though.
I really wish Visual Source Safe did that. Unix did it for source code from
day one with SCCS and later RCS.

| I forgot to mention David A. Thomas Founder Object Technology International
Inc. and Bedarra Corporation.
He developed a product called ENVY for Smalltalk and VisualAge.
His company was later bought out by IBM.
Great package for tracking changes at the change level for object oriented
software.
I would LOVE microsoft to put together a package like that.

| one option: create sub-documents
breakes larger document into smaller pieces that individuals can work on
independently.
for a solution beyond that you are looking at content managment systems or
possibly a wiki. some details about the project may assist.
