Does anyone know the likely cause of this please. When I open the DC GPO or
Domain GPO, it takes about a minute for these windows to open. This
suddenly seem to happen recently and everthing else is hunky dory.

Appreciate any ideas, cheers

You may want to check/flush DNS. This will happen if your PDC
emulator is not being quickly resolved.

I have a weird problem that you might want to comment on.
I have a system at the office with 3 windows 2000 computers on a LAN
configured as a workgroup.
One has a drive and a printer shared.
The permissions on the shares are full control for everyone.
The drives are FAT32.
When I try to connect to either the printer or the drive I get the following
message:
"The mapped drive could not be created because the following error has
occurred:
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computer."

I've never seen a message like that before.
I appreciate you thoughts.

I will double check.
They always did.
The share just magically stopped working over the weekend.
Maybe the passwords expired?? I have the settings on password never
expires.

Check to see if someone changed the password without recreating the link.
Of course after you check and see that you have a local account to log into.

I have the right to log in locally. I checked by logging in locally.
I get a login prompt then the message talking about a logon type.
I am curious about the meaning of logon type.

I can log in locally no problem at the computer that has the shares.
When I try to log in remotely I get the following message:
"Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computer"
This came out of the blue.
When I give an incorrect username or password, I rejects me, as it should,
with an incorrect username/password.
I am baffled and quite embarrassed I even have a problem here.
Thanks,

Three things..
1. Can you connect via network to the machine using that machines local
admin username/password?
2. Have you checked that machines local security policy to see if
anyone/system has "deny" network access?
3. Have you rebooted the remote system?

MRW

PS. Don't be embarassed, we all get a little scatter brained at times.

I will give it a try tonight.
I will post back the answer tonight or tomorrow as I will sit there tonight
until I find it.
This is so weird as the policy hasn't changed (At least I didn't change
it).
I rebooted all of the machines.
I can't connect to the machine with the share remotely using the Admin
username password.
A virus do something??

Go to Control Panel - Administative Tools - Local Security Policy (Local
Security Settings) - Local Policies - User Rights Assignment, and check that
the "Access this computer from the network" policy is given to the users
and/or groups that need it.

If that setting is correct and not the source of your problem, you may want
to scan for the following virus:
http://securityresponse.symantec.co...n.ircbounce.htm
l

Good luck!

You are an ace !!!
It was the policy that caused the problem.
Given I never changed the policies, either the machine is infected with a
virus, which I doubt,
or the office workers on those machines are idiots.
I think that the office workers have enough problems just figuring out how
to log into a computer so I don't think they could navigate to setting
policy.
I also tried to reproduce this problem on another LAN an got different error
messages.
I am thinking it is a MSFT funny and a worthwhile experiment for the 210
students.
Stumped me.
Thanks Rob.

Glad to hear it is solved. As for how it happened, I agree that even some
savvy users wouldn't go that deep into a policy and change something... at
least not without changing a load of other crap along the way. A virus that
has yet to be detected maybe?

Hi,

I've got the a similar problem (at least I think it's similar) so I
tried your suggestion. Flushed the resolver cache, and flushed the dns
cache on the dns server which also is the dc on which I use ad users &
computers and the other tools.
But... it didn't help.
Any other ideas why it takes long for the tools to start?

Best regards,

Would you rather him beat his head against a wall not knowing what to do
next? The smartest people in the world don't know all the right
answers....they just know where to find the right answers.

Gleen,

I had a problem like that once. The way I found to solve
this was creating local accounts on the computer witch the
resources to be shared are connected to.
I hope it helps!
Best regards,

Bruno Nobrega.

The accounts were local.
The problem was somehow the connect remotely policy got mysteriously
changed.
Thanks for the input Bruno, I appreciate it.
Sure was an interesting problem. The new problem for me is understanding
how the policy got changed.
