I'm studying for the exam like everyone else but, I need some clarification on an illustration from the CWNA official study guide page 443 -444. It states that fig 11.3 supports 2mbps data rate and that fig 11.4 supports 5.5 mbsp data rate. How were these numbers determined?

The two figures 11.3 and 11.4 show the results from two different site surveys.
Figure 11.3 shows the results of a survey where the desired throughput is 2Mbps. Notice the large size of the cells. As the distance from the access point increases the data rate automatically steps down from 11Mbps, to 5.5Mbps, to 2Mbps to 1Mbps. Since the desired data rate is 2Mbps the distances between the access points can be large and still support the required 2 Mbps.
Figure 11.4 shows the results of a survey where the desired data rate is 5.5Mbps. The size of these cells is considerably smaller that the previous example. This smaller cell size represents the maximum distance a client can be from an access point before the data rate steps down to the next data rate of 2Mbps.
The greater the distance from the acccess point the less the throughput. The 802.11b specification defines these data rates as 11,5.5,2 and 1 Mbps. The change in data rate is not a smooth transition throughout the range but discrete quantum jumps.
