Author CWSP book question...have a look please

If you have the CWSP book, please have a look at Figure 13.7 on page 303.

The diagram shows a tunnel connection between the laptop with a WLAN client device and the EWG (Enterprise Wireless Gateway). I understand what they are trying to say, but shouldn't that tunnel really show as going through the AP? After all, the EWG is not a wireless device. It is connected to the AP and the traffic flow will go EWG/AP/Client and Client/AP/EWG.

To me, the diagram can be a bit confusing, know what I mean? And it is not the only instance of this. Skim through the chapter and you will see some other instances of this.

Thanks!

I see what you are saying, but I believe the diagrams are shown as such because APs operate at Layer 2 of the OSI model, while the VPN tunnel operates on Layer 3.

This illustrates the security issue that is mentioned in Chapter 13 regarding "Wireless VPNs."

I know what you mean, but the diagram give the impression (to me) that the AP is out of the picture once the tunnel is established and that is incorrect. That was my point.

Thanks for the response!

While we were hoping that the L2/L3 aspect would be obvious, perhaps it is not in this case. The point here is that PPTP is a L3 VPN technology and the AP, while in the connection at L1/L2, is not relevant to the VPN itself. Good catch - I'll make a note of it.
