| Hey all... It's certainly been a while, but it's good to see familiar names still hackin away at their CWNP and such. Just wanted to drop in, and see if anyone had taken the CWSP exam and passed yet... Any experiences? Any new cool software for sniffing/monitoring/logging I should know about?
Again... It's good to be back...

| Hey Phil...welcome back!!!!
Still can't beat my two favorite tools...Airopeek NX and AirMagnet.
Looking forward to speaking to you!

| Thanks for the warm welcome. I noticed that you got your hands on the Orinoco Gold card... What OS were you running with that card? Those and the Truemobile 1150 PC, and mini-PCI cards are the client products I'm running. I have never seen the "Act as Base Station" option in Client Manager with Win2k or XP. Am I running the wrong driver/firmware? Also, does anyone have any problems running Netstumbler with XP?
I'll give Airopeek and AirMagnet a run. Thanks for the heads up.

| Yeah...had an issue with the Orinoco and acting as an AP. Thanks to Devin from P3, you have to use the Avaya drivers. Then you will have that feature. My Avaya Silver has it and I have used it under WinME and on Win2K. Not tried XP as I don't have it installed any place.
You'll like AirMagnet...it is very nice. The only place it is really weak is in packet capture...at least on the iPAQ. Airopeek is well worth the price for the features it gives you. And they (Wildpackets) have a pretty decent class (WP-106) to teach you how to use it. It is essentially a CWNA class with Airopeek thrown in every place they can. For AirMagnet, they have a 2 day course on how to use it and it is pretty good as well. There are just so damn many options with each of them!
So what certs are you working on Phil? Still going for the CWSP?
Later! | |

| Guess what?
Meijin is right on the money about the WP-106 from wildpackets. We have a partnership with Wildpackets and were able to incorporate the detailed packet-level information from the WP-106 courseware into the new CWNA 2.0 courseware (release date: Jan '04). Now, instead of the WP-106 being a few packet details with CWNA stuff everywhere, it's the other way around. :-) Their courseware was high quality, but there was certainly much overlap between the two. Now, ours is that much more comprehensive. Additionally, Wildpackets is a CWNP Education Center and teach CWNA and CWSP courseware - and do a fine job of it I might add. One of their primary instructors, Joshua Bardwell, is a seriously awesome engineer and instructor. I took his WP-106 class myself and was highly impressed with his knowledge of the standards and the technology itself.
Meijin is right about something else as well - you have to have both AirMagnet and Airopeek. Everyone that has troubleshot a wireless network with any precision and in any detail has figured this out. I just spoke with Dean Au (Pres. AirMagnet) at length about this issue - how BOTH are needed and that they don't really compete in the way the manufacturers think they do. All of our classes use both analyzers - for different tasks. Kudos to both Wildpackets and AirMagnet for great products, support, and playing nice together for the benefit of customers! SWEET.

| Agree 100% Devin!
Phill Shade taught my WP-106 class and he did an excellent job. Keith Parsons taught my AirMagnet class and I think he has forgotten more about WLAN based technology than most of us will learn.
I have gotten some info from Josh Bardwell for CWSP and am trying to get that approved now through our training department.
And just for you to also note Devin, looking hard at another of your partners...Global Knowledge...trying to pick up their back to back "Integrating" and "Securing" classes. Have you been through either?
Thanks! | |

| I'm workin on CWSP still. I haven't finished the book yet. I had to re-read through page 250 as a refresher since it's been so long since I've picked up the book. I only have the last two chapters to go now.
So have any of you actually implemented a "secure" WLAN yet using pre 802.11i technologies (besides Devin/Kevin)? I just got my hands back on my equipment at work (just been lazy), and updated all the firmware. Just picked up two Dell Poweredge 650's, and started implementing Radius/VPN with Win2k and Orinoco AP-1000's with Gold PC card/Truemobile miniPCI card clients. I can't seem to get 802.1x authentication on my AP to work with my Radius server though... I have to give it another run this upcoming week. The annoying part is going to be documenting all of it... I'm not looking forward to that...

| Global Knowledge classes do not fully prepare you for the CWNA or CWSP exams. They are a good intro level (read: prep) for CWNP classes. |
