I've got the Selftestsoftware package for the 218 and there are a lot of questions on it about calculatig custom subnets etc. is this indicative of the real exam? Moreover, if it is can we take a calculator into the exam? - I can do it with a calculator

There is a possibility that you might run into a subnetting question or two.

The exam includes a calculator in it. Just click on the button that says Calc on the screen and it will bring it up. Although most subnetting can just as easily be done on the paper/tablet that they provide for each exam.

There's no subnetting on 218, however it's a great thing to know for MS design exams. Check out freak's subnetting guide

from friends who have taken the exam " Quote no subnet questions " so i would go with no there will be no subnet questions,
