Author Age old question...

Well I passed the 218 on Friday for my MCSA.

Now, the old catch 22. With only one contract job under my belt, how is it going to look to potential employers that I've got a few certs without any experience. It took me a year and 17 days (to be exact) to pass my A+, N+ and MCSA. I don't want the title of a paper MCSA but I can see how it looks from the outside. I feel like I've taken time to learn about the 2000 platform without taking any shortcuts so I'm confident in that regard.

Just curious on the feedback of certs vs. experience.

In order of importance to hiring managers

1- Experience
2- Degree
3- Certifications

At least that is what I have found so far

If you are lacking in experience big time, do volunteer work for your church or a non profit organisation, or something along those lines.

I'm in the same boat. I only have 3 years exp & that isn't enough around here.

Go get experience. No one has experience until they have experience.
Can you give me the name of one tech who had experience before he had experience.

To be quite frank, the business world is often less what you know and more who you know. Attend seminars and workshops, attend a college that offers IT internships, make contacts, remain positive and realise that things like this take time and patience.

Once you get the foot in the door, it is as Jimi Hendrix once said "Are you experienced?"

Volunteer and get onhand experience. Go above and beyond by doing additional work at home. Setting up your own lab at home will give you a lot of that needed experience.

networking is a good idea.

No not the CAT5 and routers type of thing. meeting people in the industry, get yourself known. as said sometimes in can be who you know not what you know
