Ok what you should of done was to create a username and password on the windows2000 system which is the same as the one used for loging in on the Windows 98 machine. This is the username and password you use when it asks you for the network password.

Well then you wouldn't use a peer-to-peer network; you'd set up a Domain based network.

To put it simply, in a domain network there is one or more computers that keep a database of all users and security settings. You log on to this machine. In a peer to peer every computer has their own user and security database. Peer to peer is good for a small number of machines; domain is good for large networks.

This is a bug with the netlogon feature.

Create a user name and password for the user on the 98 box to access shares on the 2000 machine.

I have seen this problem time and time again.

is this solely a 98 bug?
or when Windows(9x,2k,xp) doing peer, this will happen?

This is not soley a Win9x bug. If you are using NT/2000/XP in a peer to peer workgroup environment. User accounts will need to be setup on each machine to access resources on that machine over the network.

This is one of the main reasons why for networks of greater than 10 PCs, you'd want to seriously consider a domain based environment.

Here's a good article for you to read. scroll down to the IPC$ section.

Sorry Rus, I didn't mean my reply to come off that way. I thought you were just telling kill97 that there is a KB article for him to read about the whole user account password thing. I didn't think your post was telling him there was a KB article explaining why it was soley a Win9x bug.

Oh, I didn't take it that why.

I had this problem with my 3 computer home workgroup of a 98, and 2 2K boxes. I remembered finding a KB article about it however I misplaced it.
