Hey Guys!

88. You are the desktop administrator for your company. A new shipment of computers arrived recently. These new computers will replace outdated client computers.
You install Windows 2000 Professional on one of the new computers. You attempt to join the computer to the domain. You receive an error message stating that access has been denied. You need to be able to add the new computers to the domain. After you install Windows 2000 Professional on all of the new computers, what should you do?

A. Log on to each computer as local Administrator, and then join each computer to the domain.
B. Obtain permission to create computer objects, and then join each computer to the domain.
C. For each computer, create a computer account in Active Directory, and then join each computer to the domain.
D. Run the ipconfig/registerdns command on each computer, and then join each computer to the domain.

Answer: C

Shouldnt the answer be B? I can see it either way, but B seems like to better way to go.

Do we assume that "desktop administrator" DOESN'T mean "system administrator" but more of a "junior administrator"? OK, let's make that assumption for now.

C sort of makes sense: The System Administrator, not the desktop administrator, will have to add the computer accounts in Active Directory. But it doesn't work as an answer to the question since (we assume!) that the desktop administrator is not the Sysadmin.

What about B - "Obtain permission to create computer objects": here the System Administrator will have to grant you the right to create Computer Accounts. This seems fine as an answer.

Manage Computer Accounts in Active Directory in Windows 2000

"To Add a Computer Account: to perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Account Operators group, the Domain Admins group, or the Enterprise Admins group in Active Directory, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority."

Let's start again! If you *are* the System Administrator (not an unreasonable assumption as it's a freakin' MCSA exam!!) then I'd go with A. I've often found problems joining client PCs (2K or otherwise) to a domain which is (nearly always) resolved by logging on as local admin and sort it from there.

So, on balance a poorly worded but interesting question!

There' lots of interesting reading at Labmice!
