| The Primary sends the secondary a notify message. The secondary then requests the SOA from the Primary. Once the secondary has the SOA, it carries out further transfer according to what is stated in the SOA.
For AD Integrated, all zones are primary due to AD multimaster technology, and all zone transfers are taken care of by AD.

| Several ways the zone transfer may take place:
1. Primary notify the secondary.
2. Periodically, Secondary will request for the transfer if neccessary.
3. Administrator intervention.
For the first case, you must configure the SOA to notify the secondary when the zone has been changed. After the secondary zones have been notified, they will query the Primary to verify that there are some changes(by checking the serial number) and request for transfer if the serial number is different.
For the second case, you set a refresh inverval in the SOA so that the Secondary will query the Primary periodically and see if update is needed.
Finally, the administrator can use the "transfer from master" function in the DNS server to request for transfer immediately.
I hope that will clear your doubts about DNS zone transfer. Have a nice day!

| Actually, primary zones are transferred, (process of zone transfer, as mentioned above), to the secondaries, which is the process of replication for standard DNS zones. Active Directory Integrated Zones are replicated via Active Directory multi-master replication! A much more fault tolerant and secure solution! Not to mention, it eases administration a hell of alot!
For the techinal meaning of "hell of alot", check the Techinal Digest for Techinal Jargon! Don't mind me! I'm just splitting hairs! |
