You have just installed a new device driver on a Windows 2000 Member Server machine. After restarting the system and logging on you receive an error message. You decide to restart your system. Which startup options might be helpful in diagnosing and fixing this problem? Choose all that apply.

A. Recovery Console

B. Safe Mode with Command Prompt

C. Directory Service Restore Mode

D. Last Known Good Configuration

Good luck everyone!

I would have to say....

A. Recovery Console
B. Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Directory Services Restore Mode is no good for this scenario.

Last Known Good Configuration will not help since you have already successfully logged on since installing the device driver.

Good question.

A and B are the only two options that are going to help you out in this situation. The LKGC works if you have not logged on after making a change. Directory Service Restore Mode works in Active Directory only. This leaves only A and B as possible answers.

Thanks

I agree with A and B. LKGC won't cut it since we already logged back into the system.

Agree with everyone above, answers (A) and (B) for sure.

Answer (D) would have been a possibility, but since the user has logged on after installing new device driver, it negates this option.

I'm tagging along with A. and B.

A.yes
Because it would allow you to remove the offending files without loading the OS.
B.Yes
Because it would bypass most drivers when it loads.
C. no
Its a member Server, no AD on it to restore.
D.no
Since you have logged on before the error appeared the last known good was overwritten.

Correct Answer: A, B

Explanation: You have several recovery options in Windows 2000 that are designed to give you the ability to get your computer running properly. Some of your recovery options include:
* Safe mode - Starts Windows 2000 using only basic files and drivers.

* Safe Mode with Command Prompt - Starts Windows 2000 using only basic files and drivers and displays the command prompt after logon.

* Last Known Good Configuration - Starts Windows 2000 using the registry information that Windows saved at the last shutdown.

* Recovery Console - Starts a command-line interface that provides a limited set of administrative commands.

Although Last Known Good Configuration can be a helpful recovery option it would not be useful in the above scenario as you have already logged in successfully since making the configuration change. Once you log in you create a new Last Known Good Configuration.

Note that while Directory Service Restore Mode is a safe mode startup option, it is not applicable in this situation as the AD database isn't shot and the server in question is a Member server rather than a DC.

Good job everyone - see you tomorrow!
