Author NAT Question

Since NAT & RRAS configuration is part of the 70-218 exam I thought I would post this query here.....

I managed to get NAT working in RRAS on a W2K domain controller and a W2K pro machine on the LAN can now access the Internet without a problem.

The issue here is that the line does not disconnect when idle. The properties of the remote router (public interface) in the routing interfaces node withing RRAS has been set to hang up if idle for 5 minutes, but the line doesn't drop. It doen't respond to right-click > disonnect either.

The only way I can get it to drop the demand-dial line is to disable it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Often times there is a service or activity that thinks it needs the connection, that is not apparent. Like during login, or a DNS query, a connection to the modem may be initiated, even though the user is not looking to go to the internet.

Thanks for the pointer JB.

I think I will break the NAT server and rebuild it from scratch again. In any event this is good practice.

Try searching the Microsoft Knowledge base for NAT issues. I recall Cyberdude had a thread on this topic and referred to some KB articles regarding NAT. The thread is in the 216 section here, but you would have to go back a few months to find it.
