| What are the 'rules' when it comes to moving files on the same NTFS partition? I always get this stuff confused. It retains it's attribs right? Does anyone have any easy way to remember this stuff because I always forget it and it is very important for 218. Thanks for your help. | |

| If you move a file or folder within a partition it retains its permissions but if you copy a file or folder within a partition it inherits the permissions of the parent folder that it was copied to.
So they only time that the permissions will be retained is if the files are moved within the partition otherwise they inherit the permissions of their new home.

| Just remember...
Move Retains Same (partition)...MRS
All other moves/copies inherit from the target folder.

| Here's a couple ways I've used to remember.
"Files always inhert unless moved within the same NTFS partition where they then retain."
"Move within the same retains"
