Not really, just thought I'd mention I passed 218 this morning. As Cris, Jeff and Wbafrank pointed out it is quite a straight forward exam considering the other exams in this track. Not to difficult but not a complete give away either.

Some IIS questions, Active directory and networking. As stated in numerous posts, this exam is a collection of 210, 215, 216 and 217. If you have made good notes when revising those exams you should do well on this.

Thanks to everyone else whom I haven't mentioned for their help and advice.

Now it's either 219 for the MCSE or on to 270 for the XP exam.

I would just like to mention that a young lady sat the switching exam for the CCNP at the same time I sat 218 and she aced it! Never met her before but she knew her stuff with a 948 pass, Congratulations Debbie. Great to see women giving us a run for our money!

Great job Lexy! If I remember correctly, that makes MCSA too, so congrats again! Which will it be -- 219 for MCSE or 270 next?

Thanks Zaraspook,

After reading your remarks I will probably go for 219 as this then completes the MCSE. I've just found all my notes from 217 so I might book the exam before the end of the month and revise from my notes along with some hands on.

And not forgetting the link to Chapter 9 either.

Then go for either XP or spend three months doing the CCNA before Christmas.

What do you have planned?

Great job Lexy

Hope I'm as luckly next month, when I take 218.

Just like you Lexy; then on to 219 for my MCSE.

Again, GREAT JOB!

Congrats Lexy! Go get 219 out of the way then if you choose to play around with XP pick up 270 for fun - although, I understand 270 is harder than 210 or 215.

I need 3 more for the MCSE then I, too, might spend some time on CCNA - haven't decided yet.

Thanks both,

Katman, I had a lot of IIS questions and DNS scenarios the majority is basic networking and as everyone else has already said it's troubleshooting when it all goes wrong.

If you found 210 and 215 easy to relate to then 218 is the same style (although, some questions are drawn out with simple answers.)

Pavlov,

Thanks, I think I will go straight on to 219 then experiment with XP before the CCNA.

If you need any pointers with your remaining exams let me know.

Congrats on the pass! Go get 219 out of the way. If you understand AD, then 219 is almost too easy. Good luck!

I have already found my notes from 217 and printed the contents of the chapter 9 link, revision starts tomorrow!

KScheler, what are you working on at the moment, is 219 really that easy? I was told 218 wasn't that hard but still revised for a month to make sure.

Hey Lex:
I'm slowly working on 218. Been really busy at work this summer. Still plan to do it by month's end. I want to get it out of the way before Fall semester starts. After that, not sure. Our Cisco Academy head guy wants me to go for the CCNA. Might do that, will get free training. Also, I'd like to get the CNA, just to show up a couple of my co-workers that always brag about Novell and how much they know about it but never get the certs.
Sexy Lexy

2002-08-06, 2:10 pm

LOL!

Novell is different from Microsoft but the exams are straight forward and test on the knowledge in the courses etc. so when you get to grips with the administration of the server you are half way there. Apart from the Networking Technologies exam which really is a mutha, just ask any CNE that has sat the exam!

If you still have a good foundation from all the core's then with a logical support perspective you should pass 218.

Hopefully I will get to sit 219 before the end of the month.

I know someone who sat the first Novell exams when they were written tests with pen and paper, nice to see that we have progressed.

Lex:
Thanks for the support. I'm not real worried about the 218, just need to find the time to review a little for it. That's the hard part right now, finding the time.

I suppose the best advice I could give anyone is this:

Consider how you would support a Microsoft environment then take into account everything that's new in 2000 to assist administrators. As Microsoft like to promote the new features of their software this eliminates half of the questions straight away and the rest is down to experience.

Know why you would use the command console for instead of the last known good.

Know why you would use path ping instead of tracert.

How WINS and DNS resolve names, how they use replication partners and DNS to BIND.

After that it's the basic networking with subnet masks, gateways and IP addresses.

Hope this helps.

Well, it definitely did, Lexy!
About the 219 exam, it should not be too hard. Most of the case studies are upgrades or migrations from NT4, so be sure to know the issues concerning this.

Good luck

Thank you all for the advice and support.

It's off to the 219 forum and just by looking there it could do with some additional posts! Doesn't anyone take this exam?

Well done indeed

I have one question for you and the others, Why have you done the Microsoft exams and a number of them before the CCNA???

I have my CCNA and seem to be working very backwards, as my next exams will be A+ Hardware and Operating Systems, then onto MCP
Sexy Lexy

2002-08-11, 10:53 am

That is a very good question to be honest with you. I can't speak for the others but I have always been a network administrator and then decided to do my MCSE.

This year, it was a choice of updating from NT to Windows 2000 or the CCNA route. I decided to add Windows 2000 to my NT experience but I was going to go the Cisco route last year until Microsoft changed the policy on certifications.

My reason to move on to Cisco is to expand upon my knowledge and learn more about LAN and WAN networking. Concentrate on the LAN side first with the operating system then move on to the WAN side and learn how to connect, manage and administer that side.

I don't know many administrators that are certified in Cisco and Microsoft either but by the looks it, others on here have decided to do the same.

Hope this answers your question.

Congrats Lex!

Nice to see you doing so well. Hope you haven't abandoned the CCNP path!
I'm planning on taking the 218 for my birthday present next month. How did it compare to the 216??

Again, great job!
(and very eye-catching message title!!)

Ciscoteacher,

If you've already passed 216 then 218 won't be a problem. 216 is LAN/WAN configuration and troubleshooting and 218 is along the lines of:
"There is something wrong with .. " or
"This is broken, what needs to be done to correct this?"

The exam is centred around administration (Hence the certification) but comparing levels of difficulty with 216 being a 10 then 218 is a 5 but don't think it's a giveaway.

Some questions are very well phrased and you really need to know support and administration of a Microsoft network. If you have both these skills then the 218 MSpress book is more than enough to get you through.

I am throwing everything at 219 (My last MCSE exam) so that I can start on the CCNA as soon as possible. My second router will be arriving shortly so I can pretty much study everything I need for the associate level exams an well as the professional level.

I've managed to buy the Cisco and Sybex books for 607 along with various switching, routing and networking Cisco press books aimed at the CCNP, CCDA and CCDP.

This means that the next year or so is already take up with the pursuit of these four Cisco certifications. However, it will be a welcome break from Microsoft exams and an excellent opportunity to expand my knowledge of LAN and WAN design and support.

Good luck on the MCSA exam, glad you like the title of the thread!
