What are the main advantages of XP pro over XP home?

do you feel that the difference is worth the money?

the reason why i ask is that i build systems for people as a sideline and when asked, i generally recommend the home version as currently, the pro edition is nearly $100 more in price. most of my customers have simple needs, a few have small networks at home where internet access is the only thing shared. only a small percentage of customers have the need for several accounts on one box.

recently, a prospective customer asked why i recommended not getting the pro edition, and i began to wonder if personal biases were playing a part in my decision. i must admit that i grudgingly use MS products as that is what the customer wants, but am loathe to give them any more money than is necessary.

any opinions?

XP Home is not able to join a Windows "Domain", it is restricted to workgroups only, which should be fine for most home and even some small home office type users.

XP Pro also allows installation of some services such as message queuing used by some network applications, (learned that one by experience when a developer that I work with wanted to run some test code at home).

Those are two things that I personally know of, sure that there are others.

let's just get the pricing right first:

XP Pro = $139.95
XP Home= $89.00

Directdeals.com

So it is about $50.00 more, worth it if you ask me.

139 that is cheapest ive seen it, but i dont usually use it so....

but my last version of home was only $62 as long as i bought hardware (Maxtor 80GB SATA hard drive) with it.

One more thing that comes to mind is Pro's ability to support dual cpus.

but for a home user with no need to join a domain or use multiple processors home edition is the way to go...imho

I think IIS and Remote Desktop are the two features that really make Pro better than Home. I know some people may not find any use for IIS but myself being a student, I need IIS to develop my ASP pages for class.

Yeah, I forgot about encryption.

That's a pretty big one to consider as well.

That chart is pretty handy though.

great link...i spent a little time looking for this and couldnt... i wonder if it had anything to do with my mozilla browser on microsoft's web site.

actually from microsofts point of view, pro does have a lot of bells and whistles, but i see a lot of things that most of my customers probably would not like full time.

any automatic processes might not be desired for gamers, although i am starting to get a lot of people who are into integrating their home entertainment system with their computer in order to back up DVD's, transfer home movies and digital pics, also several are archiving old print pics to digital media, etc.

but for the remote desktop, for that i use VNC. its easy and works for win98 and up.

also another totally off topically related question... how is the encryption in Word Perfect compare to most? my Dell has that preloaded and i do know that when i open one that is pass protected, it takes forever to open and maxes the cpu in the process. it uses something called "Entrust"

as i have just started studying sec+, i am completely unfamiliar with this program.

I find XP Pro better for networking, file sharing etc, from a securtiy stand point.

XP home does not allow you the full advantages of NTFS.

The one place where I would consider Pro for home use would be if you have multiple processors.

The chart mentioned earlier (I have it on my cube wall) shows that Home does not support a dual processor configuration.

Well said.

Only use XP Pro! Home isn't worth the money.
