I should probably know this but how does one establish a remote desktop session without logging the other user off. The XP machines are in two different workgroups, no domain. The attempting account is not the same as the one that is logged in interactively. Whenever itry to connect it logs the other person off. I have done this sucessfully in the past. Any ideas???

You may mean Remote ASSISTANCE. (MS don't make it easy...)

Try this site:

I tried that one, it didn't really help that much. Thanks again...

just to make sure swigga, the machines you are using have win xp pro right? not home, cause remote assistance only works with win xp pro, just thought i'd clear that up before we went further.

have you ever tried VNC?

it works with win98 and up.

i assume you are trying to create a sort of whiteboard where you and the host computer have control over the desktop?

if so, VNC is hard to beat for ease of use and conveinence...

it will definitely keep the other user on line...

in fact, i used to install it on someone's computer without their knowledge and then log into it while they were doing something.

i would then take control of the mouse to freak them out.

VNC allows simultaneous control of the desktop including the mouse and keyboard, so it can be an interesting tug of war.

i cant tell you how many times we would be rolling on the floor when we had some poor unsuspecting soul going on this...

Remote Assistance works with both Home and Pro. It is designed for remote control.

Remote Desktop works only with Pro and designed to access the desktop remoted. It allows only one connection either local or remote so it will log any user off. This is by design.

Most third party software like VNC, PCanywhere, Laplink, Dameware, etc works like Remote Assistance.

What exactly are you trying to do?

i think he is looking for remote assistance.

if you want to share a document with someone else and you BOTH have win xp, then you are all set.

if one of the computers is not win xp, then use VNC.

remote desktop is only for when you need to say access your home computer from work, and there is no one there.
