Ok I have server 2003 installed and set up as a dc with AD. I have a xp pro box in the same network. I know how to change the xp settings to join the domain. My question is do I just set up a user account on the domain controller and login with the xp box to join the domain? Or do I also need to list the XP box in computers section of AD?

I also have a workgroup set up. If I join the xp box to the domain and want to change it back to the work group. Do the group policy settings that were applied while it was a member of the domain revert back to the local policy settings after it is joined to the workgroup?

The XP box and the DC has a static IP addres. Do i need to configure DNS on the DC? And do I list the IP address of the DC as a DNS server on the XP Box?

Thanks

When you join the XP box to the domain, you will be prompted for a username and password that has permissions to join the domain. This account (Administrator) is usually a member of the Domain Admins group.

The computer object will automatically be created in AD for you.

Group Policy settings are applied everytime the computer logs into the domain. If you remove the computer from the domain, the Group Policies will be removed. At least that's what I understand. Maybe someone else can verify that.

If you want to use DNS name resolution on the XP box then you must configure a DNS server on it. There should already be a DNS server supporint AD because that is one of the requirements to have AD.

So do i set the dns number on the xp box to the ip address of the Domain controller? Then the xp box will use the DC to find addresses?

Thanks

Setting up DNS for XP machines SHOULD be straight forward. Yeap, shouldn't need to specify a DNS as long as the DC has been setup for DNS. However...

If your new XP box takes ages to login chances are you have a DNS problem. Putting in the DC IP address resolves this problem. (Yes, it is a quick fix and may be you should find the REAL problem at some stage.) This is just one of the many XP networking issues you may encounter. Whenever SP2 is release "most" these bugs should be fixed!!

Also, if you are installing XP on a PC and have it connected to the network, you can get it join the domain during installation. When you've finished and rebooted, you'll been prompted to "Add A New User" - assuming you're logged in as the Administrator. Could save you a trip to the server...

You client must be pointing to the DNS server that is hosting your AD namespace.
