Author member server & standalone server

-Strict starts-
In a domain,the servers that are not domain controllers are member servers.
And in a workgroup,the servers that are surely and cant be domain controllers because then it wouldnt be a workgroup,are called standalone servers.
-Strict ends-

Well i wonder , can we call,in a directory;
a non domain controller both be called standalone server and member server?

and in a workgroup ,that server that doesnt hold a directory,can be called both member server or directory server?
or is it strictly like what i told before ( see strict),meaning member server belongs to domain structure and standalone server belongs to workgroup structure?
Thanks

A member server is joined to the domain. A stand alone server is not. Neither have active directory.

whoops, i meant:
"...can we call,in a DOMAIN; ..."

If you are in a domain and are joined to the domain, you are a member server. Joining the domain means that you have a computer account and the computer logs on to the domain at startup.

A stamd alone server is part of a workgroup or a peer to peer network.

u both tell me its a member server when joined to a domain but not a domain controller and its also again a member server if its in a workgroup.

can we also say its a standalone server when joined to a domain but not a domain controller and its also again a standalone server if its in a workgroup?

Sorry for the typo, I edit the post. Your second paragraph is correct.

A member server that is not a domain controller could be a file server, a print server, a RAS server, a DHCP server, things like that. You don't usually run these services on domain controllers

ok so;
member server is a server that may be running DHCP,DNS but not a domain controller and connected to a domain.
standalone server is a server in a workgroup.

But what i am asking is:
"member server is a server that may be running DHCP,DNS but not a domain controller and connected to a domain." <- can we call this standalone server,too?

"standalone server is a server in a workgroup." <- and can we call this member server,too?

or are they strictly as:
"member server is a server that may be running DHCP,DNS but not a domain controller and connected to a domain."

and

"standalone server is a server in a workgroup." ?

thanks

and

"standalone server is a server in a workgroup."

just seen this on MS Press book:
"The RIS server can be a domain controller or a stand-alone server that is a member of a domain containing Active Directory. "

means both standalone server and member server can be in a workgroup or domain.
