Came across an interesting question about Remote Assistance in Windows XP that I would thought I would try out in my lab.

Scenario:

Establish a Remote Assistance session with a client computer without requiring an invitation from a user. “Offer Remote Assistance.”

Requirements have been met
- Group Policy has been configured to enable Remote Assistance offers.
- Both users are in same domain
- XP Pro SP1 workstations
- Windows 2003 Enterprise Server

Problem/Question

1. Where does the Expert click to “OFFER” Remote Assistance?

You made me dig for that one. I didn't think this was possible.

To offer Remote Assistance without an invitation
Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
Under Support Tasks, click Tools.
Under Tools in the left pane, click Help and Support Center Tools.
Under Help and Support Center Tools, click Offer Remote Assistance.
Type the name or the IP address of the computer you want to connect to, and then click Connect.
Follow the directions that appear on the screen.

Thanks, found it. Now, I just need to tweak my network to get it to work. (a switch is not forwarding the request)

Anyway, I didn't think it was possible either until I saw this question. With Windows 2003 Server, installed it is!

It might be all the little things with 2003 Server that pushes companies to install it.

Thanks again!

Remote Assistance still only works on “Ask” not “Offer”

Using your suggestion, I found where to “Offer Remote Assistance” But on attempting to do so in Help and Support Center, I get the Error Message:

“Access to the requested resource has been disabled by your administrator”

My problem may be within the “Helpers” section of the policy:

The policy on BOTH Windows XP Pro SP1 Workstations:
Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Remote Assistance

Offer Remote Assistance Enabled
Helpers: Show…

“To configure the list of helpers, click “Show.” This opens a new window where you can enter the names of the helpers. Add each user or group one by one. When you enter the name of the helper user or user groups, use the following format:”

<Domain Name>\<User Name> or
<Domain Name>\<Group Name>

Example:

Domain1\User1

????

P.S. gpupdate /force have been done on both clients.

Suggest using the RSOP snapin to make sure that the policy has taken effect.

I just tested this on my home LAN and it worked perfectly. I used a local group policy on the XP Pro client. The only difference is that I had to make the request from my 2k3 machine since I only have one XP Pro box on the network.
