| Im sure this has been asked many times but as a newbie i wondered if anyone can recommend a good book or books for 70-270. (Im doing the MCSE at a training provider)
Should i go for simply Microsoft books or
other publishers? I havent read any good reviews (Amazon etc) for Microsoft's book on 70-270 - "MCSE Training Kit (Exam 70-270): Windows® XP Professional". Overall conscensus seems to be that its not detailed enough
Thanks | |

I used the M$ Training Kit for all exams, including this one. I take this exam today, so I will let you know if the book covered the material.

The exam is very similar to Win2000 except for the new features in WinXP. The exam was pretty straight forward. As I stated, I used the MS Training Kit and found it to be OK. If after reading the book, you don't feel it was an adequate source I would recommend augmenting your resources with whatever you can find. It certainly can't hurt. Best of luck with your exams.

| Hello Grave
As with you - work commitments are preventing me from following this course at the pace id like to. Im due to do the XP module in July. I found the 1st module quite easy (network and pc support)- took the A+ exam at Smarttrack last week. Im hoping to get 2 more modules out of the way by end year.
Have smarttrack provided u with books? if so what are they? Microsoft ones?
Im in croydon south London

| Hi again,
Yes they gave me the Microsoft press books, the MCSE 2K study kit I think! I actually done the 2k course rather then the XP!
How did you find the A+ exams after the course? Have you done both sections? What do you recommend for studying for these?
Thanks | |

| I posted a thread about the A+ exam and my sources. You can read it here:

They GAVE you the books? Didnt u have to buy them? i do find the Microsoft books just tell u all the facts and thats it. The books are Microsoft preaching to u how good the product is and the only way is the Microsoft way. Plus they are very heavy on text and not many illustrations from what I have seen. But I do concede they are still good books and worth having. As far as I know no one book source will give u enough for the test and give u enough experience and understanding (unless someone knows otherwise). I know that its not just about taking a test - u have to kno whow to use the technology in a real setting and thats the approach i am trying to take for this and other modules. My next exam will hopefully be the XP 70-270. We were told its the only one you can realistically take before finishing the course because of the crossover of topics on each module.
Because i only started in May this year,I had to do the XP track as 2000 wasnt on offer. I still think companies arent going to use XP as a desktop system - they will stick with windows2000 then when ready will just go straight to 2003 and skip XP or even stick with 2000 (as a desktop os). So that makes me think why am I learning XP? Anyway maybe I am wrong.
Did u complete all the modules but didnt get the chance to take the exams or did u complete just some of them?
Do u have a network/server set up at home?
Im building a server but lo and behold I cannot find a decent case anywhere for a decent price that isnt built like a tank.
I go to computer fairs every week and see so many junk cases - its the one computer component where there is so much poor quality around and they come with awful power supplies which i just rip out and replace with high quality dual fan supplies.
Anyway thats enough moaning from me!

| Thanks i will read your post regarding the A+ exam!
I was given books, maybe because i am on the MCSE 2k original course, shortly after i started they messed things around, changed pricing etc, we were given the option to change from MCSE to MCSA... i decided against funnily enough!!
I have a small network setup, at the moment only my server and my main machine which is running XP Pro, i am trying to source machines, any machines will do really! I also have access at work and i have managed to persuade them to buy a server, which is good, this should be delivered very soon!
I have one module left which i take in two weeks "advanced security" and im done, we were advised to leave all the exams til the end, when im done i was start revising big time, up til now i havent had the time but now i realise i must make time! I think this is the only way to suceed!
With the microsoft books i agree lots of detail, and mainly what they want to say you need different sources, and real life experience!
Have you checked out ebuyer.co.uk they are reasonably priced for hardware you might pick up a good deal?
fancy swapping xp and 2k notes?
| jayesser 2003-06-20, 6:53 pm |
| Thanks - ebuyer has some cases i will buy one.
Not sure what use my xp notes would be to you?
|
| Yeah your right i will just stick with my 2k ones, see how things go!
ebuyer are quite good, never had a problem with service and never had a dodgey item! what i do like is that customers can review products so it allows you to see if its any good before purchase! |
