Does anyone know how to use Sysprep to automate the oobe (the final graphical stage of XP setup where you are prompted for registration, computername etc.)?

I have use setupmgr with fully automated selected but I keep getting prompted for the above information - I specifically need the computername and domain membership done automatically and I'm getting a bit annoyed with it!!

1. Build source machine and install all applications.

2. Copy admin profile to default profile

3. Run setupmgr.exe and create an answer file and save it with the name sysprep.inf

4. On source machine, create a folder called %systemroot%\sysprep

5. Copy sysprep.inf, sysprep.exe and setupcl.exe to this new folder on the source computer

6. Run sysprep.exe

Thanks for the reply.

Why would I want to copy the admin profile to the default profile?

Everything else you've suggested is what I've done already, sysprep is working fine apart from the oobe and this works to a point ie. the regional settings I've specified in sysprep.inf show up as pre-defined in the oobe prompts but are not automatically selected. Also when I try to join a PC to a domain, it substitutes the name of the domain as the name of the workgroup and fails to join the domain.

If you are installing applications, and changing settings you are normally doing this under the admin profile. If you don't copy this to the "default" profile, all your settings will be gone when you roll out the image.

Which version of XP are you using, and are you using the setupmgr.exe that came with XP and not 2000?

Personally, I'd recreate the sysprep.inf as it sounds like your settings are "provide defaults".

Well all the settings and configuration changes I've made to the OS itself are persistant without copying the profile, so I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.

I am using XP Pro, and yes I am using the SMW that came with XP . I've also recreated the sysprep.inf file several times and have a couple of different verions since I have a couple of different deployment scenarios.

When you say "copy the admin" profile to the default profile..do you mean simply copy the entire directory over?

sorry for dumb q...

You copy the profile using the copy command in the User profiles window under the advanced tab of System properties

Its not a dumb question, thats what these forums are here for. If you'd asked "whats a user profile?" then maybe that would've been dumb

"What's a user profile?"

Now if I gave you 10 seconds to answer that then what would you say?

Maybe asking that question is smart. It might simply depend on the environment in which it is asked. Then again it may be dumb - dumber than sin - that's because you're smart - smarter than .... sin? Mind you I don't think this really answers the question, namely:

"What's a user profile?"

Now if I gave you 10 seconds to answer that then what would you say?

You'd say I was outta time dumbo!

Erm?

troll grenade anyone?

It could also be said that someone who comes onto this message board with fake qualifications is dumb, last time I checked there was no such thing as a P.H.D., I've heard of a PhD though and most people who have them usually know the correct usage of the initials...... You could say I have a PhD in acronyms, but then that would be dumb wouldn't it?

All of those qualifications are obviously untrue. I have however provided a far better solution to Fermat's last theorem and the mortician aspect has some very real ingredients involved. Wanna tell Jesus he is dumb? Well just post it right up brother! Enjoy! LOL!! [Yet another flamer moderator ... Yawn.]
