| I have upgraded most of my computers to XP (Office and OS). Now it seems anyone who is running XP on their computer can not access our website. Any 98 or win2k machine can. XP machines outside my network can. I can't ping the address either.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I can look next? I'm about ready to pull the last hair I have left OUT!!!!
Thanks... | |

| from the post, you are THE administrator of your network. comeon. what ever happen to systematic approach to troubleshooting.
disclosed info? how is your network setup, where is this web server? internal/external. ip addressing scheme? dhcp? is it receiving ip addy from dhcp if its used, or statically assigned?
ip test- ping loopback, ping internal ip of router, ping external ip of router, ping ip of external web server.
if can ping, name resolution.
reachability test, isolate problem, is it unable to reach the server or internal with the xp configuration. xp host ping xp host, ping any other ip other than server.
check dhcp if its used, is it receiving request, is it issuing request? ip addy propery timed out so it has enough in pool so xp don't use micorosft's automatic ip thingy?
lots of things to do to systematic rule out various variable. identify problem, (can't ping server), gather fact (ip addressing, name resolution, etc) and then lay out a plan to test each possibility.

| My apologies for not being more detailed in my post.
I have a win2k server. All machines have static internal ip addrs. The website in question is hosted externally. All machines can access any other website in the world - just not ours. I can't ping the website.
All machines have server ip for dns. We don't use wins or dhcp. I added ISP's IPs in dns thinking it was a name resolution problem. No luck.
The webhost company tested their XP machine and they could access the website. I know it's a setting somewhere in XP that is blocking this. I checked the security settings of XP but found nothing obvious.
Any other thoughts? | |

| Are you pinging by website name or IP? Try pinging by IP address. Have you tried accessing the site by entering the website's IP address in your browser?
Just guessing off the cuff, this sounds like an incorrect negative entry in the local DNS resolver cache. Have you tried running ipconfig /flushdns from the command line on your XP clients? This command flushs and resets the contents of the DNS client resolver cache.
Run ipconfig /flushdns at the DNS server to make sure it doesn't have a negative entry in its resolver cache. Also, make sure there isn't a problem with your DNS set up or records.
If any of this stuff doesn't work, you must pull the last remaining hair out! No! Just joking! Instead, try rebooting one of your XP clients and then accessing the web site again. Let us know. Good luck!

| That's exactly what I was looking for, 'Spook. Thanks! I needed a fresh idea. I have actually never heard of the 'flushdns' and am eager to try it. I'll let you know...
Thanks again!!
btw: tried pinging ip and putting it in browser.

| That's an answer to one of the exam questions
If that doesen't help go to the technet
Knowledge base
there are several (30 megs of hot fixes for XP) updates you need to install just in case I think one of thouse refers to networking there is also an issue of the file format did you change to ntfs or left in fat while upgrade?
Find out about that, could cause you a few flaws...

| Wish I could help but I am better in the scenario myself!
many things can be the answer if you do not have all the details but follow the layers...
