| Has anyone installed this from DOS. I have installed it from a win 9x box and
also from an NT based box, but when i try and install it from a
blank formatted (FAT16 or FAT32) harddrive with only dos on it
freezes after copying the first set of files before moving onto
copying the second set. the second set is when you get the yellow
bar going across showing you the % it has copied.
I have tried this on 3 machines, these machines have been able to
install win 9x OS's and NT and w2k in the same manner all ok.
As an interesting point have had same problem with .NET Server RC1
Also .Net Server and XP pro have installed ok when done from
another OS on same machines
anyone got any ideas? | |

| If I remember right it has something to do with XP not working correctly with Smartdrv. If you create the XP install diskettes or boot from the CD it should work just fine. | |

| Have you tried loading Smartdrv before installing XP. I had trouble with it the last time I tried Smartdrv, but Microsoft recommends loading it of course. | |

| I haven't, but then i never have for any of the installs (9x thru Nt based) and they have been fine, it's just .net server RC1 and XP Pro | |

| I suggest that you definitely do the install by booting from CD. I've done this with both XP and .NET server RC1 with no problems. Now if you are wanting to do it via DOS for the experience, or your machine won't boot from CD-ROM (doubtful), then obviously you'll need to find out what's causing the problem. The advice regarding smartdrive is probably a good place to start. | |

| installation by booting from cd is fine, however i have a specific reason for doing from DOS without the disks, will continue to investigate, will look into this smartdrv thing | |

| The install program won't work if you've booted into DOS, you must either install from an upgradeable OS or boot from the CD or the installation disks - or thats what it says in the XP docs anyway
I think it has something to do with the installation program being a "minimal version of Windows XP" rather than a true DOS program, but I don't understand why but then I'm not a programmer so I don't care - its just won't OK? hehe
I'd guess this is why .NET RC1 does the same thing since I would assume they use the same installer. | |

| What....MS is a woman?.....that explains why it never makes any sense and costs so much - I should've guessed earlier | |

| Ms is always a woman, usually a womans rights activist who does not wish to divulge whether she is married (Mrs) or not (miss) | |
