Exchange Server Installation Trouble

| Just got my book: Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Implementation & Administration Training Kit.
With the book, there is a 120-day Evaluation CD-ROM.
So, I installed on my computer (Windows 2000 Server, with NTFS partition and Active Directory installed and also Microsoft Office 2000 Professional installed).
There are three setup options: typical; minimal and custom. Unfortunately, 'typical' cannot go ahead. so I have to select 'option' and install Exchange Server on the folder of 'Program Files\Exchange Server'.
The screen shows 'installation is successfully installed'.
Now here are my truobles:
1. I cannot see the installation 'Program Files\Exchange Server'.
2. When I turn on the book with the first Exercise: 'To simulate client poling with Microsoft Outlook 2000', the first step: 'In OUtlook, double-click the Tools menu to diaplay all available menu options, the select Services'. Then second step: 'In the Services dialog box, clieck Add to display the Add Service To Profile idalog box'. But I cannot get 'Services' option from the 'Tools' menu at all.
Because whenever I open Outlook, I got first error "The server containing the Global Address List is not longer available. You can reconnect to a different server by restarting Outlook or retry the operation when the server is reachable'.
When I click 'OK' button, the second error comes up 'The action could not be completed'.
Click OK button comes up 'Microsoft Exchange Server' confirmation screen confirming Exchange Server name and Mailbox name.
Click OK button comes up third error message 'Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The information store could not be opened'.
click OK button comes up 'Microosft Outlook' warning screen: 'Would you like to open your default File System folder instead?'
Click Yes button comes up My Computer folder but no 'Inbox', 'Outbox' etc.
From the menu bar, I click on 'Tools', but just cannot find 'Services' at all.
I wonder why I cannot get
1: The Exchange server folder even the installation is completed.
2: The Tools menu???
do you need to install to install evaluation edition of Outlook 2000 to match the Evaluation edition of Exchange server?
Thanks for advice. | |

| Dear Shiryu:
Thanks for your reply.
While I am very distressed with the trouble to install Exchange 2000, I give up 'Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server implementation & Administration Training Kit' and pick up Osborne 'Adminstering Exchange 2000 Server Study Guide'.
At the very beginning of the first chapter, is shows:
'Exchange 2000 Server makes heavy use of Internet protocols - both to do its work and to offer services to the Exchange users. Two of these protocols are:
SMTP
NNTP
.............'
With this in mind, I installed IIS with SMPT and NNTP protocol. After that, then I tried install Exchange 2000 and now it is fine.
Many thanns for your help. | |

Running Forestprep and Domainprep is not nesessary if you are already the Domain or Enterprise Administrator. In this scenario (a home lab), the installer of the domain will be part of this admin group.
Running the prep tools is only required to set up the schema, so then you can delegate the actual install of Exchange to a lower level administrator.
If you are already part of those administrative groups, (and you will be in a home lab where you installed the Domain Controller), then running the prep tools is an unesessary step, as they will run automatically when you install Exchange.
