| Why do Project+ rather than PMP? I already have my PMP (and various technical certifications) and I'm leaning towards the PMP Certificate of Added Qualification for IT Networking.
Thoughts?

| Hey Mad Chef,
IF you decide to do that, let me know. I also have thought about giving it a shot, between finishing a 2nd BS in business and my masters. MAybe we can chat about it.

| I don't know that I'd do Project+ if you're already PMP. Project+ is more geared toward those of us who have little, or no, project management experience. I don't really plan on going into project management, but I planned on taking it, then moved forward in order to upgrade to MCNE last year. I think it was great to familiarize me with some of what may happen on the management side of things.
The only plus for you might be another project management cert on the resume from another vendor. And you don't have to keep renewing the Project+ cert, whereas you may have to do so for PMP. Really, if you're a PMP, the Project+ exam would probably take minimal study time for the documentation benefits.

I went to the bookstore this past weekend and looked at the Sybex Project+ book there. It really seemed like I could have been reading a study guide to the PMBOK, frankly. I was hoping there might be a stronger focus on project management in the IT field, but I guess this reinforces my opinion that project management in construction is not really any different that project management in IT. I guess it's just easier for me to relate with IT PM. My PM work has always been coupled with being the technical lead in projects since I'm a CCIE, but I'm looking at moving into a role that is less techinally focused and more PM focused. I'm a little intimidated by the move to a position that's more PM, less technical lead because I'll be dealing with a technology that I have little technical expertise in.
Anyone out there have some project management books that they'd recommend, especially if they focus on IT? I'm not sure that the IT focus matters all that much, but it certainly seems to help me relate more easily since I'm an IT kind of guy.
Thanks for the input.

| Really, the Project+ exam, though it emphasizes IT, doesn't truly, as you state, doesn't get heavily IT specific. Most of the scenarios are IT related, and probably some of the terms. However, the test could be taken by someone with a management background and little IT experience.
I used the Sybex Project+ book, and it was OK, and another book, but I'll have to look it up at home and let you know.

| Hi,
Can't help asking, what do you guys think of:
MS Solutions Framework (MSF) & MS Operations Framework (MOF) practioner cert
They're suppose to be 'vendor' neutral & project management certs.
It's definitely cheaper than IT Project+ but of course nothing compared to a PMP.

| My sentiments exactly! Does PMI have a qualifications program in place for IT?

| Just did my PMP and now am considering appearing for IT Project+ as it needs no extra prep. Will also be pursuing CAQs for PMP and PRM (Professional Risk Manager) certifications.
For all PM related exams for IT professionals, your bible is PMBOK 2000 and reference books are:-
Information Technology Project Management, Second Edition by Kathy Schwalbe, ISBN: 0-619-03528-5 © 2002
Software Project Management, Second Edition by Bob Hughes and Mike Cotterell, 007-709505-7 © 1999
