Sybex IT Project+ vs PMP Study Guide

| I have just bought the Sybex IT Project+ Study Guide and have started to read it. Since I haven't attended a formal project management course before, I feel that the content is quite good and well-organized.
When I compare it with the Sybex PMP Study Guide, they are similar and that in IT Project+ has more pages and focus on IT cases.
Any comments on the 2 study guides?

| I like the PMP study guide. It's certainly a whole lot better than the Guide to the PMBOK. The Project+ is new to me and my only question is: Why? The PMBOK provides methodologies that work for projects across all industries. The PMP is proven and is well thought of. Project + is much newer. I see little in the Project+ blueprint that significantly differnitiates it from the PMP (except the cost because it is WAY cheaper). If you're looking for IT specific content, I think I would consider the PMI's Information Technology Systems Certificate of Added Qualification.

Like I said, I really like the Sybex PMP Study Guide. I might read the Project+ book, but I certainly would not spend time persuing that certification over the PMP.
That's my thought, anyway.

Agreed that IT Project+ doesn't, and shouldn't, carry the weight of PMP. However, as I recall you have to have several hundred hours of PM experience to apply to test for PMP, so Project+ seems to provide an opportunity to learn and proof the fundamentals of PM, perhaps even leading to opportunities to manage projects and get the hours toward PMP.

It's actually several thousand PM hours. 4500 w/ a college degree, 7500 without. So I think you raise an excellent point that the project+ could serve as an good stepping stone to the PMP.

| Project+ is also requred for MCNE. (That is the reason why I will take it)
I agree that it's a good way to start PM. |
