CompTIA security certification

| Seems CompTA is devising a security related certification.
Here is the link.

I think this is a good idea, CompTIA certifications are good "first step" certifications. If you are interested in security, you may not want to choose a CheckPoint certification (there are other firewall vendors) and the CISSP is out of the question for beginners.

| They are also working on a new exam to launch at the end of the summer 2002 | |

| Thanks for the heads up on the possibility of a NEW CompTIA Security certification and their related web-page referenced. I am definitely hoping it comes about with major support from the computer industry seeing it would make a good stepping stone to higher level security certifications in the future!
Hey Cross36, next time try posting something with some more substance versus saying that Microsoft or CompTIA is coming out with a NEW certification possible late summer? We tend to expect NEW certs to be constantly in the works and thats why many of us are here to learn and strive to get ahead of the others. Sorry to jump on you, but I hate reading peoples postings when they look to try and simple increase their counters!

| I was thinking about this new CompTIA cert,
and like....how is CompTIA going to compete with CISSP for example.
I mean, CompTIA can't put out
an Entry-Level Cert on security.
That would be joke don't you think?
Security is very important
and you can't be only entry level certified.
I don't think that works when we are
talking about a big issue like Security.
I mean your better off just going for the gold (CISSP or one of the other top certs in Security) don't you think?
I'm really curious what CompTIA will
have for the objectives on this one.
I really hope it's has some real substance to it.

| True, Dagger, I don't know that an entry-level security cert. will get one far in one's career. However, I would take it just to get some exposure to the fundamentals of security considerations. If nothing else I think a tech who takes several of CompTIAs exams is getting some good, general knowledge. | |

| yes....and dont'forget
this is CompTIA......
An entry level security cert that cost over $200.00 US and over $300.00 Canadian.....
I don't think so........lol
We are better off getting the SCP cert:

| Well, in my opinion Comptia should try making their existing certifications more widely accepted in the industry. When is the last time they put out a cert that anyone besides people like us, who take all of them anyway, paid attention to. I believe it hasn't been since A+, you could argue Network+. But i-net+ hasn't really caught on, and Server+ definitely has not, and I don't believe Linux+ has either. Instead of watering down their certfication by having 100's of them, why not have 5-10 that are held with some regard (to the extent that any certification can). Oh ya, I did kind of leave out those IT-Project+ and E-biz+ out .. cuz well they are kinda a joke, next we will have a HR+ for managers =)
well just my thoughts ..

| Not a bad idea neuralfx. I certainly like the CompTIA exams to round out some of my knowledge, however, except for those who really pay attention to the certs, most people I talk to are familiar with CompTIA, but oblivious to most of the certs and the focus of them. I have found many of the CompTIA exams to be challenging and worth the learning, but I'd sure like it if they had more industry recognition. It seems if you went to work for Microsoft or Novell they'd know what some of the more obscure exams cover, but even many in general IT management don't know. | |
