WHich is M$ basic cert that will give a good base of knowledge. I don't want to get to deeep, but would like to get some knowledge in the M$ arena

Passing any of the current exams will give you a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) certification.

You may want to check out the list of exams available and see which is the one for you.

Yes to study for and sit the exams for the 2000 O/S, would give you a pretty good understand of using and supporting 2k Pro (70-210) and 2k Server (70-215). You would be best served by the information that you would learn from both. This would give you a good perspective from the desktop support to network/domain environment. But if you only want to go one, start with 2k Pro as it will give a broader detail to the basic O/S operations. 2k Server will give you more a perspective of network services and administration.
