I just bought a Sun Ultra 5 box allegedy with a Sun Solaris 9 operating system and has the same video port as the one used on PC's. When I attempt to boot it up, I hear the count going but I can not see anything on the monitor. I then switched monitors to one I know that works--at least on PC's, and I still couldn't see anything. I suspect the machine might be devoid of an operating system, or could it still be a connection problem with the monitor. (All of my video cables are missing at least one pin. Could it be that Sun machines are more sensitive to this sort of thing than PC's?)

Sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble with your SUN Ultra 5 machine. Did you buy it refurbished? It sounds like you have a bad video port on your systems motherboard.... a common problem with the SUN Ultra 5/10 systems after a period of time. If you have a SUN compatable PCI video card available, try it. You should at least be getting video at the VGA level right after POST and the system starts to count memory...just prior to it starting to boot the OS. If you're not getting any indication on your monitor that the port is even active, such as the monitor video indicator going from amber to green, then the onboard video has probably bit the big one.... the NVRAM maintains all your system startup settings, you may need to get this updated or replaced. It would be easier, but not necessarily the least expensive option, to install a SUN PCI video card or borrow one to at least verify the problem. Good luck with it... SUN is good, but by no means perfect.... expensive and proprietary.. making them not my first choice.... especially at home.... take care!

I think the port is still functional and my video chips have gone bad. I have this wierd symptom. My monitor first goes green when turning it on, and then it goes back to amber.(The monitor seems connected to something, yet it doesn't work.) Is this compatible with rotten video chips, and that getting a card would help? (Could it be something else? If I sound like I'm nagging, then I'm sorry; I just don't want to spend money on equipment that may not do me any good.

Thank You for Responding,

As I said earlier, using a SUN PCI video card would probably be your best bet to a quick and relatively easy solution. With the indication that your monitor goes green when first turns on (a normal power up indication), then turns amber and never goes green again, tells me that the onboard video has gone bad or isn't being initialized through post. You may even have an indication on your keyboard lights that provides an error code to this problem. I would have to go look it up to let you know what the keyboard indication would be. I don't have my field service manual here, so I'll have to get back to you on that later. On board video with the SUN Ultra 5/10 motherboards has been a continuing problem at work. The quickest solution for us was adding a SUN PCI video card, and reinitializing the system, making sure that the new PCI card was being seen.
