How hard would it be getting the Sun cert without Unix access at home? Would the books and CBT's be enough? I do use Solaris at work, but no means a expert.

You can get Solaris for Intel you know. You can load it onto your PC and have all the UNIX access at home that you needed.

The Solaris certs are pretty easy from what I have heard.

Good point I never thought of that, I was just on E-bay loking for a sparc box to practice on. Thanks for the idea.

No problem. I have a good bit of experience with SunOS and Solaris, so ping me if you need some info. Glad I could be of service. Good luck.

Hey Zsolt67-

I agree with Papiya that you should install Solaris Intel but make sure you check on SUN's website to make sure your Intel machine has all the supported hardware. I ran into many problems finding drivers for my hardware. Also, if you really want to learn Solaris, I would recommend that you buy an old Sparc box. With Intel, you are unable to learn about the OBP which only a Sparc machine will have. If you use a Sparc's machine, you don't have to worry about finding drivers for your nic, video drivers, etc.

Good Luck ...

The CBT's for Solaris 7 were pretty decent. If CBT's, I would suggest tailoring your work on whatever Solaris box you end up using to the actual Exam objectives. If you can't completely cover an objective based on the CBT material, the I suggest checking the massive 3 part Solaris Sysadmin manuals.

I didn't have a Solaris box at home at the time I sat any of the exams. I was fortunate enough to be able to get by pretty well be working out the exam objectives on a Solaris box at work for an hour here or there and taking notes.

Best of luck to you.
