Dear Experts,
Can I run the Solaris on PC to prepare the Exam? Someone told me that there have some commands needed to test on UltraSPARC. Is it true?
Thanks.

It is true that some commands can not be executed on solaris running on a pc. (Like there is no provison for executing open boot commands)

But you can execute most of the commands on a pc running solaris, it is cheap than investing on a sparc machine.

I think you should do ok by installing it on a PC.

Last time I installed Solaris was on an AMD based pc. Had problems with the floppy and had to install a patch. There were also issues with the NIC, and had to install the drivers from a pervious version of solaris.

Solaris is picky about hardware, so read the HCL before you start doing anything.

One thing you could consider is free solaris-based shell access. I know there are various internet sites that allow you to obtain free (restricted) shell access. That's a good way to get you moving.

Try to get the solaris Intel and install on the PC. If dun have, you have to get the SPARC machine and install the sparc edition.

Indeed, solaris is very particular abt the hardware, display card and NIC Card.

Check out the hardware requirements before you install the solaris. It's unlike Microsoft, that most of the hardware are supported.

If i not mistaken, the download for solaris intel has cancel. You actually have to pay for the CD and shipping fees. I think it's quite alright, as long the knowledge you gain from it, will strengthen your market value.

Good lucks in your learning.

Cheers!!!

Yes, its like a Beta version. Read this:

I might download the early access release myself. I currently have Solaris 8 installed on an AMD box under VMWare. It works really well.

voirin,
In VMWare what are you using for video drivers for X ? or are you just going CLI.
Also you can get a reasonable SUN box from e-bay for $300 bucks.

I have the following installed under vmware:

solaris (has X)
slack (cli)
debian (cli)
redhat (cli)

(also have Netware 5.1 and Windows2000 Server installed under vmware)

I just wanted to see if they would install correctly, and so they did! With all these installs, I have only used the standard drivers provided on the CD. My solaris install looks rather chunky i.e. X is at 640x480. I havent been playing around with it much as i have other things on at the moment and i dont really care for GUI as I have a fondness toward cli.

Grab hold of this file (do a google search):

sunwxf86-vmware.tar.gz

it provides a graphical improvement for X under solaris under vmware I haven't tried it yet as i am flat out busy studying other things. Let me know how it goes!
