What are some good materials to study for the SCSA 7 exam? Can I still download a copy of Solaris 7? Or should I just go with Solaris 8? I've read about some of the books on Amazon.com but they all say different things. One guy says the book is good. The other says it's full of errors. I figured best place to ask was here? Help please......

If I am correct, you can only download Solaris 8 or Intel or SPARC systems. As far as materials go, I am not that familiar with Solaris books, but I would stick with the publications from Sun. "Get it straight from the horses mouth." Some people might beg to differ.

Good Luck

I think there is no source to download Solaris 7 anymore
but there is a studyGuide for the Solaris 7 track from the New Riders. I seems to be good

Please stop trying to sell this useless book, and stop trying to get people to throw their money away.

That book is useless. Big time useless.

1. It does not follow the exam objectives to the letter.

2. It does not take the reader from step A to step Z. Instead, it jumps all over the place.

3. It omits important information.

4. It does not have lab excersises.

5. The practice questions on the cdrom that comes with the book are useless.

Those reasons are why so many people have failed 310-009 on their first crack.

If you want to throw your money away, give it to me instead.

kiwini, I don't try to sell a book! I bought it myself and feel comfortable with this one. And if so many people fail their first attempt, then they definitely haven't enough practise with real Solaris systems.

I suppose you have taken both 310-009 and 310-010 and have the SCSA? If you haven't, and you "feel comfortable" why don't you put your money where your mouth is and take the tests?

Have you yourself had enough practice with "real Solaris systems", and have taken both tests to know if you practiced the right things and had enough practice?

If you knew anything about passing this certification, you would know that:

1. You need to know what to practice on so that you won't be left out in the cold when test time comes. That useless book won't tell you that.

2. You need a guide that will take you step by step to cover ALL issues that will be covered on the test, giving you specific lab assignments to complete so that you will have completed the required hands-on. That useless book won't tell you that.

3. Although I personally don't agree with it, braindumping has started on this cert already, and there are some people who don't practice anything but braindumping.

In your case, it's the blind leading the blind again.

MATERIALS I'M USING

I'm using the Study Materials from the SUN SA Course and am playing with SUN Solaris for Intel platform (free if you are using it on less than 8CPU's from Sun.com)

BACKGROUND
I've been working with UNIX for the last 3 years, not as a SysAdmin but as a programmer/analyst then as a DBA.

MY OPINION
That said... I have no problem using Dumps, Cheat Sheets to pass these exams. If you don't know your stuff then a certification is useless. Your cover will be blown in the first week on the job.

But using these dumps, cheat sheets, practice tests is a good supplement if you are actually studying and practicing at home/work.

IT'S BUSINESS
These certs are just a way of generating additional revenue MSFT, SUN, ORCL, etc.

Which generates money for Prometric... which creates opportunity for companies that create study guides, exam questions, etc.

These "purists" on the page that are whining about "dumping"... must have $125/pop to burn on these tests.

I don't know about anybody else... but at $125 a test I'll be D-A-M-N sure I'm passing it on the first try. And if it's available for free I'm going to all over bootlegging / trading etc. And we all know that a transcender or STS is not worth $99. So I'm definitely for trading.

The best parts of these forums are to server as classifieds for trading software... exams etc. Most info disseminated on this page is essentially worthless... except for that.

TYPICAL POST
"Gee... I just passed the ABC-001 Exam"

REPLY
"Wow... that's awesome!"

ANOTHER TYPICAL POST
"What do you need to pass the SUN CERT?"

REPLY
"A book and you have to study"

REPLY
"Look at the sun.com website, moron."

I'm sure the next response will discuss the ethics of software piracy... integrity of the tests and b.s. like that. But someone had to keep it real on this page.

Ok... I'll get off my soapbox...
