Hiya ppl! Could I get some input in MCSD track and study books?

| Hey all. Just a quick FYI - I tend to get long-winded sometimes, so bear with me! =)
I currently work in the mainframe field, and am quite tired of it. I spoke with a couple of people, and they said the only way to break into the other techs, is to get a cert, to show you know how to do it (since I'm not going to get on the job exp at my place - it's a Catch-22) =P
The MCSD looks more like what I want to get into, and I'm told VB is a better track to go, from my standpoint.
Do you folks think this is a viable option for me? I considered going and getting a second bachelor's degree in Comp. Sci. (my original is in History and Pre-Law), but with a full time job, that would take 5+ more years (depending on what credits transfer).
I got the order in which I should take them from a post below, and I guess Desktop Solutions (VB) is first. Could anyone let me know what a good book to get started on it is? I figure I'll need 2, one for the basics, and another for the more advanced stuff. For the advanced, I heard some good things about "MCSD in a Nutshell - The VB Tests", so am thinking about that.
I also imagine you'd all suggest me getting the Transcender tests....correct?
Well, thanks for any input you can all provide. Good luck on your own tests, and hope to hear from you soon! =)

| I think that if you were considering a change of field then the MCSD cert is extremely advisable. In my opinion MCSD holders probably have the easiest time getting jobs.
I think that investing in a couple of books will certainly be the logical first step. My first book was "Visual Basic 6 Interactive Course" by The Waite Group - ISBN: 1571691332, I found this to be an excellent begginers books which still covered quite advanced topics. I am also a great fan of the "In a Nutshell" & "Exam Cram" books. It is sometimes a good idea to start off with buying and reading the Exam Cram books first, this way you can get a feel for what you should be learning and spending your time on. Personally I don't think that it is neccesary to get a Transcender for the 176 exam as it is one of the easier exams, although I know many people would disagree with that.
However don't forget that the Internet is still a great way of learning, the MSDN site is extremely informative and VBHelp forums are also very helpful.
I hope that helps you. Best of luck.

| I am preparing my certification with a VC approach. I read the following books,
- MCSD Traing Kit Serise, Microsoft Press
- ExamCram Serise, Coriolis Press
There are corresponding VB books. |
