Hi, everybody,
I still be confused about the IT job trend.
Do you think the certifications are very useful for the jobsearching.
I will get degree next year, but no experience in IT. Which one is better, MCSE or Sun Java (SCJP or SCJC)? How much time I need to prepare SCJP? Thanks.

The most important thing over the next year is to get experience. I don't know if Canada has college internships, but if they do, you need to find one.

If not, get a part-time job at a local computer repair shop (no matter what the pay).

Slowly work on certs, but make experience your top priority. Which cert to get depends on what kind of IT career you want.

Hope that helps.

Certification only help if u in the final process to compare with other degree holder.

For example: both of you got B.S of CS, however u have MCSE or CCCNA. U might get the job.

u know, i m so worrying about my future, bcoz i m fresh, no experience at all. the only time i can practice is doing the lab at uni ...

in my situation, i think is quite hard to step out my first step. and i need more on hand practice

You are both going to fail miserably if you don't get a job or internship and gain some real world experience

Way to encourage them

You need to get some hands on experience as soon as is possible. Accept that you will not get the job as the network administrator with the certification alone and no solid work experience to back it up. However, the experience really isn't hard to come by if you don't mind volunteering a few hours a day or week (whichever your schedule allows). Look at your local schools or libraries and ask if you can volunteer to help them with their networks. Remember, you gotta climb the ladder to get to the top. Nobody jumps right into the CEO seat. So be patient and if you put the effort into your career it will be worth it in the end.

Also keep in mind that right now the economy is in a slump and the IT sector has taken a big hit - patience

It may not be encouragement, but sometimes the cold hard truth is what people need to hear.

As someone who has a couple years solid exp + a degree, I am finding it hard to find work (although I think it's due to alack of certs). For someone with a degree and no certs/exp, it could be much worse.

An important distinction here that nobody seems to be making is between the kinds of job seekers. Some companies go directly to colleges looking for new grads with little/no exp but a good head on their shoulders. Unfortunately, the majority seems to favor people with many many years exp. Hell... I've seen job postings requiring more windows 2k administration experience than it is actually possible to have.

Over here in the UK many larger companies have graduate intake programs, so having experience is not such a major issue - you are only "competing" against other grads.

What information is available at your uni/college? Do you have job fairs? Every year it must be the same situation with people graduating with little/no experience so if there's a careers centre talk to the people there.

Your both going to fail miserably was a moronic statment to make. Try to gain a intership unpaid or paid to get yourself some experience in the field and good luck guys.

In my opinion, it didn't look good for you to have MCSE or JAVA certs if you don't have the experience to back them up.

Is you degree IT related? If so, then you will be fine for job searching.

Certs won't help you if you don't have any experience.
