Waste of my Time....

| I've been in IT for 9 years doing helpdesk.
9 years! Is there ANYONE out there who's done helpdesk THIS long? I've only passed 2 of the required 7 MCSE exams and it took me a long time to do it.
I little over a year aog I was promoted to Sr. Network Engineer at some place and then two weeks later I got demoted (but not officially by title) to Desktop Support for no reason other than to promote my co-worker (who had NO prior experience) to Helpdesk Supervisor. SO in effect I was a Sr. Network Engineer doing Desktop Support.
Well, after much suffering I finally left that place for a lesser paying job and a generic title. After all this time I've concluded that my heart is not into doing this kind of work anymore...I just can't see my self building servers/PC's with crappy software, then troubleshooting it just because the designers of the SW/HW don't know what they're doing...
If I have to explain to another person how to copy a file to the network share folder i'm going to pass out...hahaha...
I went to 4 years of college as a Comp Sci major and now 12 years later I STILL have no skills???
It's a dog eat dog rat race out there. Every man woman and child for themselves in the IT workplace...
All those arrogant IT people who liek to boast about working in the computer room for 80 hours straight or how they know every IP address from 0 to infinity...when was the last time you picked the boogies out of your kid's nose just b/c they didn't know it was there??? ahh but I assume these people don't have kids...oh well..
Anyway, after I accept the fact that I've wasted my time in a profession I didn't want to be in I'll have to make up my mind to do what I've always wanted to od which is write...then those arrogant IT people will start laughing at me and call me a loser for giving up...
What do you do about those people who like to laugh at other people every time something bad happens to them?? Or act like everyone else is messed up except for them? Or they act as if they've always been ina a worse situation so they knwo more than evyerone else??? People like that are very very annoying...
Later!!
P.S. I just printed out a bunch of braindumps..hahaha...will I go home tonight and read 180 pages of Q&A's?? NO WAY!!!!

I passed six of them in 12 weeks (the seventh I reused from my MCSD).
I wouldn't sweat about it, though--the MCSE isn't worth much in today's crumbling IT job market.

| I can relate. I'm 2 yrs now as a helpdesk jockey with the 2 years previous to that as tech support/helpdesk for a software company. I am sick to death of supporting users. I am just embarking now on a quest to get into a solid lan admin type position where its more project/trouble shooting based. Because if Ihave to spend 1 more year supporting users, I'll be leaving IT myself.
You might find it easier to move onto something else in the IT field if you had your MCSE. I know alot of guys on here say certs are useless now, but they are not.(IMO) The more I have, the easier I find it to get interviews for better jobs.
I don't think the IT market is all that bad. The industry is just maturing a bit and is going through a phase where it is weeding out all the "fly by nighters" who took their 8 month quickly courses (like me) cause they where told they'd make 60k.
Keep trying to find that brass ring in IT, whatever it may be for you. Or move onto something new. Life is short. Don't just sit there in a job you hate for 25 yrs.

| Well said Zen, as there is no career field that is a bed of roses be it I.T or not. | |

| This is a great example of how general university DO NOT NOT NOT NOT prepare you for the real world of IT. You have to do work outside of your general education to get anywhere. It's cut throat out there and if kids are holding you back , then work harder or leave.
I take it your degree prepared you for more of a "Programming" profession. Get into that. I am wondering why you couldn't handle network engineer. My guess is you dont have a full understanding of that role.
How well do you know CIDR, Subnetting, Superneting, VLSM, Stuff like that/ CISCO? if you have been just laying dormant for these past 11 years waiting for money and promotions to fly at your face you have another thing coming br0.

| Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch
And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thou foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

I don’t think much of them.
Anyhow. It seems that you do indeed hate your job and your current profession. I salute the fact that you realize this and are making efforts to do something you want to do. There is nothing worse than being in a vocation you do not like.
