I'm looking for a job. It's Sunday morning and I'm browsing the ads online and mailing and faxing resumes like I do every Sunday. All the IS jobs want years of experience, BS degrees and laundry lists of qualifications. And then there's this ad which runs every week in the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

"Info Sys NOW INTERVIEWING , Help Desk, Network Support, PC Repairs. Data Base Admin. Internships. Temporary, Part-time, Contract. Up to $18/hr. No experience necessary. Certifications a must. FAX 314-429-3790, 314-787-0888 or itintern8@nhstlouis.com"

Notice the "No experience necessary" and the "Certifications a must". Sounds like what we are all looking for, huh? Only problem nhstlouis.com is the local New Horizons which is a training company. But fax them your resume and you'll get a call trying to sell you expensive classes, not to offer you a job. Yes, they are selling training under the help wanted ads.

Isn't that illegal? Coincidently, this New Horizons is here in St. Louis which was the location of a notorius training company called Linuxgruven. They advertised high paying IT jobs if only you would buy their training first. And they did actually hire a few of their own students who passed the Sair exams including someone I know. But the pyramid scheme collapsed in 2001. Here's a link to a little about that:

This is not the only example of this kind of stuff. Work at home schemes are fairly common in the Monster.com job listings as Ghaouf noticed. So be carefull when searching the job ads.

I am still trying to get my foot on the door, sent out my resume to several places but no calls, it seems like they all looking for experience first and than certs.

That is a tactic New Horizons Computer Learning Centers have been using around the Country. Basically it works something like this:

You contact them and tell them that you'd like the job. Some account executive, with the aid of his sales manager, convinces you that you'd make a wonderful paid intern making $15 an hour. Problem is that a condition precedent to your employment is you agree to sign up for a full package of training.

Don't have the $10,000 it takes to pay for the training. No problem. They have financing sources that can lend you the money for the training. Never mind the fact that you can't service the debt with the income you will generate from this $15 an hour internship. You'll be making $60K a year as a network administrator and easily pay back the loans. Yeah, right.

To add insult to injury, once you've completed your training guess what happens to your paid internship? Do you think it continues? Remember, new people are going to enter the same pipeline you passed through and there needs to be intern postions available for them.

An open invitation to New Horizons franchise owners, sales managers, and account executives. Is anything I've said above inaccurate?

An open invitation to consumer protection agencies. Isn't it about time to stop this abuse?

When I am interested in ascertaining how businesses function I use the Internet as a source. You might check out www.newhorizonssucks.net.

I've seen the same thing while searching Bostonworks.com

It is just wrong to advetise that in the Wat ads.
