| Hey,
ive been wondering what to do with my certs and where to specialize in.
Currently I have OCP application developer 6/6i, MCSD, Web programming and OCA 9i dba associate certifications on programming side
and A+, Network+, CCNA, (next week MCSA) on networking side
Im just wondering what kind of jobs should I look for with my current experience -
AND which most importantly to which direction to go to?
Im thinking about CCNP or SunSolaris/Linux..
Ideally I would like to become Database / Network administrator (or IT manager / cio)
Please give me some thoughts | |

| What is your background- as far as work experience? Are you already in the industry or are you hoping to break in? How you answer that largely determines your first move. | |

| One of the postings near the top of this board references homeland security. My feeling it that the current growth areas of this business fall within two categories. The first specifically relates to homeland security. Here if you have the requisite experience, I'd focus on the CISSP certification. One of the forums here covers it. The second is wireless (802.11X). Once they get the security issues handled that area is also going to be a key source of new business. I'd look to the CWNP forum for information.
Don't bypass your local community college when looking for a reasonably priced source of training. For those of you without degrees, I'd be looking at obtaining your BS/BA and advanced degrees. Otherwise you'll hit that glass ceiling.

| In the medium to long term i would look to get out of Oracle. One possible route for you, could involve, Oracle Storage SAN migration, this is quite lucrative at the moment and eventually every company will be using Oracle in this fashion.
However, gaining experience with SAN equipment is very difficult. I do know of server support guys who invested £15k of their own money in EMC training and now charge £500/day for their services.
The one problem i do see for you, is that most of the major work i see going on with Oracle is Linux/Unix related. I see very little work with Wintel going on.
From there, if you want the CIO/IT Manager job, you should go into Technical Project Management and climb the ranks from there. |
