some do's:
always restate the position & how you heard of it: "The Help Desk Tech I listed May 28, 2003 on Monster.com" or "Joe Smith, who is employed with XYZ as a Help Desk Tech II told me about..."
List some different information not found on your resume or
Elaborate on something in your resume that is targeted to that position
in the closing paragraph state something like "I will be contacting you on monday, May 30, to follow up..." (if you have a phone number, obviously)
always ask for the postion..

some don't's:
do not just restate your resume.
unless asked for, specifically, do not send references with the resume & cover letter.

Good Luck!

I am writing you in regards to the LAN Administrator/Computer Operator position you have available in the May 10th edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. From the qualifications and requirements that come with such a position, I feel that I would be an excellent candidate to join your organization.

Currently, I am a Systems Administrator with BlahBlahHealthcare, located in Atlanta, Ga. I am currently the administrator of an eleven-server “lab” which includes 3 robotic libraries. I perform system backup and restores as well as disaster recovery on a number of platforms. I also support remote customers with their backup/restore issues. Most of the support is of the network administration nature. I feel that my technical knowledge, management experience and customer service expertise would make me a valuable addition to your company.

What sets me apart from the hundreds of applicants you are currently reviewing is my combination of technical knowledge and superior personable attitude. I save troubled customers, keep existing customers thrilled and develop and mentor new employees. I am always looking for ways to improve upon my successes.

Thank you for taking the time to review my resume. I look forward to speaking with you soon to examine a position in detail. Please feel free to contact me anytime at 404.471.1578. I am eager to bring my ideas and enthusiasm on board.

Sincerely,

don't know if it is good...but I have used it for the last 4 jobs that I've had and have always been given the job after the interview. I keep getting better and better jobs is why I have had so many in the last 3-4 yrs...but am now happy.

Well I am still in school, and I have already taken a Job Search class before (they help you work on your resume, interview skills, cover letters, etc...) But that was over a year ago. I've looked at many online, bought a few books, and I just am having problems selling myself when it seems to me that the majority of people in there cover letters talk mainly about how good they would be for the position and how much they could help out the company due to there past experiance, something which I don't have. Most coverletters I've online and so forth typically would only work for people with previous related job experiance, or at least transferable skills. I've mainly worked in a factory, cleaning and assembiling machinery and spend some time working on a coffee shop (though that did give me some more people skills). It I had worked in a team invironment or anything more appliable, I wouldn't be in such a bind trying to write this.

This book will likely be your best career investment besides college and certs.

Not only do you have to be able to walk the walk... you need to be able to talk the talk. Success in the business world requires communication skills.

Learn to write effectively. Learn to speak with confidence. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Never let your ego stand in the way of individual or team success.

Always sell your strengths, and be honest about your weaknesses. Try to turn your weaknesses into strengths... its all in the wording, and the delivery.

You should spend as much time perfecting your resume as you do studying for an exam. Once completed... update your resume quarterly.

Oh, and don't be the idiot that cannot find a backup of your resume so that you can't recover it when your PC gets trashed. That title is reserved for me.
