| My current contract was just ending and I accepted an offer with another company for a salary in the 60-70k range. There still are jobs out there. Why did I get this job ?? - because i've busted my a$$ for the last 5 years and have both references and evaluations to show for it. I'm also going to get a high level clearance for the company and it looks like a very exciting opportunity supporting homeland security. I found out about the job through networking but I never would have been told about this job if it wasn't for my work ethic. I impressed the right people and they set this thing in motion. I'm convinced that if you cannot honestly say that your work ethic isn't better than 90-95% of the general population... then you need to get out of this industry...there are too many quality people in it already.
My advice to anyone still looking.. or currently working - whatever you're doing.. be it help desk, pc repair, whatever - you've got to do something to separate yourself from your other peers or you're going to have trouble moving up. Keep at it and good things will happen. Good luck.

| You are making fantastic point.
All the certifications and degrees only allow you to meet minimum requirements for most jobs. It is WHAT YOU have done that wins you a job, not the fact that you have certifications (by themselves).
I find that a lot of people in IT have this idea that they can rest on their certifications or that they deserve a high paying job because they are MCSE. Those days are over. I have news, we all have them and no matter what you have, there are aloways those that have more.
I saw a picture in the paper of a guy holding a sign that said "I am MCSA/A+/Net+ and cannot find work". I wonder if that fellow has a clear history of performance and progressive completion of objectives.
There is no substituite for good work ethic. Oh yeah- I also belive that you should give back (to the church, to the community etc.) when you are on top.

| Thats the long and short of it. I read somewhere that LUCK is a acronym for Laboring
Under Correct Knowledge and that you make your own luck. I realize my shortcomings and I work like @#$% to make my shortcomings into a positive. I totally am convinced along with luck its not what you know butWHO knows you and your work. Like in the post he impressed the right people at the right time.
Can anyone suggest any other means of networking besides going to seminars and joining associations that possibly can help.

I would try to get a job in the BIG gov't agency as a contractor. Reason being is this--> you'll have a lot of exposure to many different people. You have a much better chance of impressing one of the 'right' people when you're in an org. w/10,000 people as opposed to a small company with 50 people. Even if you can just get a help desk job - it'll get you in the right environment.

| i presently work at a school where i do minor admin, but mostly shitty dtp and wordprocessing (i had done 16 years of dtp beforehand and am really getting sick of it).
i have applied (via an internal trawl within the regional educational authority) for a job at the centre dealing with ict at the authority. i suspect it will start off as helpdesk support, but the job description seems to eventually point at much better things.
you never know. as it's a trawl, it won't be like a regionwide advertised post, so there may be fewer apply for it. maybe a year of using some of the admin tools used by the education authorities in the uk would be enough to get me a job supporting all the schools in the region.
the money is a little better than what i'm on, but i guess as the person in the post gets to do more elabourate stuff the salary will reflect it.
i think i am good enough to get an interview out of it, but i'm prepared to wait until the next opportunity if i don't. |
