That would be hard to say
Different states have different levels of living
$20 in Louisiana is a great salary, but in New York or Cali it might be Miniumim wage

You can measure salary with certification.

You can look at the certmag site for some salary surveys, but the items are really misleading as has been indicated. I saw a site awhile ago that allowed you to put in certs, experience, education, and zip code and spit out a number. But even then, it is still just a number. Even my job site, we have people doing the same job with essentially the same backgrounds with $25-30,000 difference between them. Is that good? Not if you are on the bottom end.

I recently added 4 separate certifications this past year. you know what I will get? Zero.

That would be: ttp://www.certmag.com/salarycalculator/calculator.cfm

But you have to register to use it.

It all depends on what the your employer is willing to pay for them. For example, the company that I work for has salary ranges for each postion in the company, a minimum and maximum for each. 90% of the time when you move into a new postion you will get the minimum, the go from ther. The engineering department that i am in is the only department that gives bonuses for certs, For CCNA you get $1500, CCNP $2500, etc... These are cash bonuses, not raises, those have to be negotiated.

that's absolutely true techno. I am currently stuck on a project with non-technical bosses and a poorly-written contract that is losing money. raises and bonuses only worsen our P/L. I actually know people on other contracts within my company that are lower in grade, but make more money (about 10K more :eek) The only thing that is keeping me here is the enormous amount of play toys we have.

It seems like I will have to find another job if I want a raise...

They always over estimate the salary.
