What experiences good and bad do you have with online degrees? The good online degrees that I have heard of are from Strayer University and University of Phoenix and they seem pretty good.

I've taken three classes at Strayer online, not bad. Strayer is expensive. I'm not sure if I'll continue there. Two reasons:

1.I've heard a lot about HR people not looking at resumes with Strayer on them.

2.I wanted to transfer any/all "certs" toward my degree (to graduate early) but Strayer only does that if you have a couple of years experience with the "certs".

Good luck, I'm still looking.

I've looked at them too, but I'm not old enough. (only 19), only online Uni that will have me is here in Canada. I'm really thinking about it good and hard. Athabasca doesn't seem to bad. They sent me a course catalog which is quite comparable to course catalogs from all other universities I was interested in. I don't have much time right now to take any classes though

Florida State University has an excellent program in which you can achieve either an undergrad or post grad degree in MIS, as well as other specialties.

Only kicker is that you need your first two years of college taken care of (AA equiv). Many Community Colleges in Florida offer online Assoc. degrees as well.

These are considerably cheaper that your more common on-line universities.

Aditionally, for anyone who lives in Florida, most universities have executive programs that offer the major coursework in 18 months, again providing you have the AA.

Look into the Universtoties in your area for similar programs. They are typically under advertised, and considerably cheaper.

My two cents...

Online degree = independenc study!!!

Is it good? Depend on the point of view and the school.

I don't recommended.

I think that depends on the individual. I was/am a poor "student"...independent study works for me. Allows me to work at my own pace.

if your going to get a degree online, please do it at a STATE University, plenty of them have programs, like that guy was saying, Florida State has a BS in computer science completely online, many state universities have online degree here in my state...
just don't go off and pick some no-name private school that costs 1000 per class, you won't like the outcome.

it's all about the degree, and the reputation of the school...

btw,, florida state's out-of-state tuition is half the price of most private school's..

I checked out FSU's online computer science degree but they want you to go through their community college first. FSU sounds really good because its a reputable college but they want you to already have an AA and I think they want you to have it from their community college. I checked out the community college and I dont think their whole program is online. Me living in Virginia and working full time need something completely online. Maybe I can get an AA at the local community college and transfer to FSU.

they will take a AA from any state community college

I wonder if I get a AA in Computer Infomation Systems at Strayer that I can transfer to FSU for the computer science degree or will I have to take alot of extra courses. The community college here in Virginia has an AS degree in Computer Science that transfers to ODU but it will taker me longer to get that than with Strayer. I am really interested in the computer science program at FSU now. Let me know what you think or know.

like i said before, get your AA/AS from a state community college,
if you get your AA/AS from strayer, when FSU doesn't accept you don't say i didn't warn you,,, or they accept you and say nothing is transferable,,, don't believe me,, call the admissions office and ask them,,
they will say... What's Strayer???

I posted this in the Strayer thread but I'll repost it here since this is more generic.

It ain't cheap. It's in the $20K range but I'm getting Federal loans and stuff to cover it. I figure I'll be 33 this year so I have a lot of time to earn a lot of money and pay it off. It will be worth it in the long run. Also, if I took classes at another school in the Chicago area I could be paying $20K per year so it actually saves me money in the long run and won't take as long.

Not a lot of info on the site but this will get you started.

AIU Online

The only problem with state school program is that if you are out of state you could be paying as much as a private school and you might have to show up at the school once or twice a year. That's not an option for a lot of people. The private ones tend to be 100% online.

Doing the associates at a community college is not a bad idea. It will take you some time to complete it but it's all the same general ed stuff anyway. AIU can shave almost a year off of that so if time is an issue you could do that but you end up paying more.

The main thing is making sure the program is accredited. Kennedy-Western for example is not accredited according to someone who told me that.
